The present invention relates to a fine grained WC-Co cemented carbide. By adding an extremely small amount of Ti, V, Zr, Ta or Nb alone or in combinations, a grain refined cemented carbide structure with less abnormal WC-grains has been obtained.

Fine grained cemented carbide with refined structure

There is disclosed a method of making a ready to press cemented carbide powder with low compaction pressure suitable for the production of submicron cemented carbide by means of powder metallurgical techniques milling, pressing and sintering. The method comprises using from about 1 to about 3 wt-% pressing agent with the following composition, less than about 90 wt-% PEG and from about 10 to about 75 wt-% of blends of high molecular (C12-&#x3c;C20) saturated or unsaturated fatty acids, or salts thereof containing at least one element of Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Mg, N, Na, V, Zn. Preferably the grain size of the cemented carbide powder is submicron. In a preferred embodiment the method includes a dry pre-milling of the hard constituents mainly WC-powder for about 2-45 hours in ball mills with cemented carbide milling bodies or using other suitable dry milling techniques prior to a wet milling step. The invention also relates to the powder obtained by the method.

Method of making a submicron cemented carbide powder mixture with low compacting pressure and the resulting powder

A method of making cemented carbide at which powders forming hard constituents and powders forming binder phase are wet milled together with a pressing agent is disclosed. The slurry is dried, preferably by spray drying, compacted into bodies of desired shape and sintered. A cemented carbide powder with a reduced compacting pressure at a predetermined weighing in of 18% shrinkage can be obtained by using from about 1 to about 3 wt-% pressing agent with the following composition: less than about 90 wt-% PEG and greater than about 10 wt-% of long chain C&#x2267;20 fatty acids, their esters and salts, in particular, erucic acid and/or behenic acid. The invention also relates to a cemented carbide powder with low compaction pressure.

Method of making a cemented carbide powder mixture and the resulting cemented carbide powder mixture

A dense cemented carbide product is described. The product is manufactured from WC with a grain size between 0.1 and 0.4 &mgr;m, fine grain size cobalt and ruthenium powders. The product is used in PCB machining operations where the addition of 10-25% Ru to the binder phase offers up to 25% wear resistant increases and up to 100% increase in chipping resistance in PCB routing compared to conventional materials (6% cobalt and 0.4 &mgr;m grain size).

A dense cemented carbide product is described. The product is manufactured from WC with a grain size between 0.1 and 0.4 &frac14; m, fine grain size cobalt and ruthenium powders. Method of making ultrafine wc-co alloys

A cemented carbide drill/endmill blank and method of manufacture thereof wherein the drill/endmill includes a core and a surrounding tube with improved technological properties. The difference in Co-content between the core and tube is 1-10 wt-% units and the cubic carbide content is 8-20 wt-% in the tube and 0.5-2 wt-% in the core.
