A chip-scale mode-locked laser including a cavity including a gain medium for amplifying signal electromagnetic radiation (signal) through stimulated emission, the signal comprising a signal wavelength; and a passive or active mode-locking device to enforce pulse formation in the laser. The mode-locking device includes a thin-film waveguide having a thickness on the order of the signal wavelength so as to confine and guide the signal along the thin-film waveguide, and a material comprising a second-order nonlinear susceptibility to enable active or passive mode-locking of the signal. The mode-locking device leads to generation of pulses of the signal outputted from the mode-locked laser.

Chip-integrated mode-locked lasers based on thin-film nonlinear waveguides

A metamaterial shell architected on a core particle (comprising organic or inorganic material) so as to form a novel class of structurally hierarchical particle that has degrees of freedom in design parameters stemming from effective optical response of the metamaterial shell and from the electromagnetic modes in the core to elicit optical behaviours that are not easily achievable and designable in particles having simpler or smoother geometries.

A system for performing spectroscopy, including a first frequency comb source outputting first electromagnetic radiation comprising a first frequency comb centered at a first wavelength and having a first repetition rate; a second frequency comb source outputting a second electromagnetic radiation comprising a second frequency comb centered at a second wavelength and having a second repetition rate; a nonlinear device positioned to receive the first frequency comb and the second frequency comb, wherein the nonlinear device interacts the first frequency comb and the second frequency comb through sum frequency generation or difference frequency generation so as to generate an output electromagnetic radiation; and a detection system outputting a signal in response to detecting an interference of the output electromagnetic radiation with a third electromagnetic radiation, the signal comprising information used for determining a spectrum of at least the first frequency comb or the second frequency comb.

Cross-comb spectroscopy

An OPO including a resonator comprising a material having a nonlinear susceptibility generating an output electromagnetic field in response to a pump electromagnetic field inputted into the material. The output electromagnetic field has one or more output wavelengths longer than one or more pump wavelengths of the pump electromagnetic field. The resonator has dimensions less than, or on the order of, the one or more output wavelengths in free space.

Wavelength-scale optical parametric oscillators

An optical parametric oscillator (OPO) including a thin film waveguide including a material having a second order nonlinear susceptibility generating an electromagnetic wave in response to pump electromagnetic wave inputted into the thin film waveguide. The electromagnetic wave has a first wavelength or first set of wavelengths longer than a second wavelength or second set of wavelengths of the pump electromagnetic wave. The thin film waveguide has a thickness on the order of the first wavelength or the first set of wavelengths in the thin film waveguide so as to guide the output electromagnetic wave along the thin film waveguide.
