Systems, methods and devices provide efficient data protection by creating backup images of snapshots using the replication capabilities of the data protection system. The snapshots are point-in-time representation of a data set, where the snapshots allows recoverable states of the data set without having to make a complete copy. A snapshot to be backed up is stored in a primary volume. A virtual volume is created, the virtual volume comprising references, such as pointers, to the snapshot data stored in the primary volume. The snapshot data referenced by the virtual volume is then replicated using the replication capabilities of the data protection system. In this manner, the replication of the snapshot does not burden the primary volume that is hosting the snapshot storage.

Leveraging continuous replication to copy snapshot backup image

Various systems and methods for backing up multiplexed backup data streams from a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device to a sequential access media device are disclosed. One such method involves creating multiple identities of the sequential access media device on a server. A portion of a memory of the server is allocated to each respective identity of the sequential access media device. A backup data stream from the NAS device is written to each allocated portion of the memory. Data written to each allocated portion of the memory is multiplexed for transmission to the sequential access media device for storage.

A computer-implemented method for facilitating fault-tolerant backup jobs may include (1) receiving, at a media server, a backup assignment from a master server, (2) detecting a communication failure that inhibits communication between the media server and the master server, (3) initiating a backup job at the media server based at least in part on the backup assignment received from the master server, (4) caching, due at least in part to the communication failure, a catalog of the backup job at the media server instead of forwarding the catalog of the backup job to the master server in real-time during the backup job, and then (5) transferring the catalog of the backup job to the master server upon determining that communication between the media server and the master server is no longer inhibited. A system and method for defining a separate lifecycle policy for each of one or more data images. A backup server is configured to select a first point-in-time value, which indicates when to begin moving a data image from a first data storage medium to a second storage medium. The point-in-time value corresponds to a calendar date and an hour or hours of the day. The backup server is configured to continue selecting a respective point-in-time value for each data storage medium within a tiered storage hierarchy in order to define the lifecycle policy. The backup server may be further configured to delete a copy of the data image on a source data storage medium when completion of a move of the data image to a destination data storage medium is detected. Further, the backup server may detect scheduling conflicts between two or more lifecycle policies.
