A coating composition for use in a photographic element, the composition comprising an aqueous solution of: two or more surfactants; a hydrophilic binder; and optional matte particles; wherein one of the surfactants is represented by the following Formula (I):R&#x2014;CHCH&#x2014;(B)-A&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)where Ris F(CFCF)&#x2014; and n is 3 and 4 or 3, 4, and 5, and the fraction of all Rwith n=3 is at least 40%;B is a divalent linking group; y is 0 or 1; and A is an anionic group with a counterion or an amphoteric group. A photographic element containing the coating composition is also disclosed.

Coating composition for photographic materials

A method for measuring the dynamic surface tension (DST) of a proposed outer layer of a liquid composition, to be curtain or slide hopper coated, over a range of surfactant levels to determine the surfactant concentration which produces the maximum resistance to air currents. Measurements are made by the Wilhelmy Blade Method, in which a surface of a pool of composition to be measured is placed in contact with the lower edge of a suspended blade. The static method is modified such that the surface of the composition touching the blade is continually refreshed to simulate the formation of fresh curtain surface by pumping the composition upwards through an open cylinder and allowing the composition to spill over the edges (&ldquo;overflowing weir&rdquo;). The bulk surfactant concentration providing maximum resistance to coated streakiness or mottle is highly correlated with the concentration providing maximum surface tension gradients in the overflowing weir apparatus. Thus, for new or non-optimized air-contact layers, the optimum surfactant concentration can be predicted quickly and inexpensively through off-line measurement of surface tension using the overflowing weir technique.

A thermally processable imaging element is disclosed having a protective coat overlying at least one thermographic or photothermographic imaging layer containing an organic silver salt and a thermally activated reducing agent for silver ion. The protective coat includes a film-forming binder comprised of a water dispersible polymer containing hydroxy pendant groups and, to reduce low density spots visible after thermal processing, a combination of anionic, non-ionic and fluorocarbon moiety containing surfactants satisfying formula defined selection criteria.
