Various methods, apparatuses/systems, and media for automatically deploying an SDN are disclosed. A processor implements a declarative model for an SDN deployment and receives, in the declarative model, service order data from a user corresponding to the SDN deployment. The service order data includes high-level declarative statement data specifying a desired end-state of the SDN deployment. The processor translates the high-level declarative statement data into a low-level specification data that includes data corresponding to a topology and how the SDN should be deployed; creates a run-time topology model based on the low-level specification data; determines whether the service order is valid or not by comparing the low-level specification data against predefined policies and infrastructure constraints data corresponding to execution of the SDN deployment; and automatically executes deployment of the SDN based on a determination that the service order is valid in response to the run-time topology model.

System and method for declarative automation for deployment of a software-defined network (SDN)

The present disclosure may include a method of handling test packets in an apparatus with a first unit communicatively coupled with a second unit. The method may comprise designating a test packet with type information, the type information indicating whether the test packet is handled by the first unit, the second unit, or either unit. The method additionally may include setting one or more bits of a register of the first unit to select whether the first unit will handle all of the test packets with type information designating either unit. The disclosure further includes associated systems and apparatuses.

Systems and methods of test packet handling

A method includes determining addresses, determining masks, and storing the masks in a ternary content-addressable-memory for matching a candidate address to the masks to determine matches to the addresses. The addresses include an address width and positions, the address width equal to the number of positions. Each mask matches one or more addresses, includes a mask width equal to the address width, and includes matching criteria for determining whether to filter a given address. The matching criteria includes a matching component specifying that an identified position in the address includes a particular value or a wildcard component specifying that an identified position in the address is to be ignored. The masks include at least one mask with a wildcard component. The number of masks is less than the number of the addresses. The number of possible addresses corresponding to the masks is equal to the number of the addresses.

System and method for filtering addresses

According to one embodiment, a method may include receiving a frame via an ingress port of a network element. The method may also include assigning a virtual destination address to the frame of the traffic. The method may further include internally switching the frame within the network element based on the virtual destination address. The method may additionally include modifying the virtual destination address one or more times such that the virtual destination address is translated to an actual destination address identifying an actual egress port of the network element. Moreover, the method may include routing the frame to an egress port of the network element based on the actual destination address.

Method and system for virtualized forwarding

According to one embodiment, a method may include assigning a virtual local area network (VLAN) ingress connection identifier (iXid) to a frame upon ingress. The method may also include classifying a traffic flow for which the frame is a part through ingress engines of the network element based on the iXid. The method may further include swapping the iXid for an egress connection identifier (eXid) in the frame. The method may additionally include policing or shaping the traffic flow based on at least one of the iXid and the eXid. Moreover, the method may include classifying the traffic flow through egress engines of the network element based on the eXid.

Method and system for providing contextualized flow tags

According to one embodiment, methods and systems may be configured to support client-to-network, network-to-client, and network-to-network flows in a network element including multiple plug-in units. Such support may include policing and shaping flows as aggregates across plug-in units, combining outputs of two upstream traffic managers to network ports on two plug-in units, combining network flows that ingress two plug-in units, and shaping traffic to client ports.

Method and system for distributed virtual traffic management

A method is provided for distributing multicast channels from a multicast/predictive multicast cache located in at least one selected network device of a multicast network. The network device upon receiving a channel request from an end-user transmits the requested channel from the multicast cache if the requested channel is available in the multicast cache. Else, the network device requests the multicast source for the requested channel along with a group of one or more multicast channels centered at the requested channel. The network device transmits only the requested channel and other channels are cached in the multicast cache on the network device. Upon receiving a request for removing a channel the network device caches the channel for a prescribed duration before evicting the channel.
