A foil journal bearing, having: a shaft; a top foil surrounding the shaft in a circumferential direction; a corrugated bump foil surrounding the top foil in the circumferential direction, wherein the corrugated bump foil includes a plurality of adjacent corrugations that each include sidewalls that extend from a radial inner end to a radial outer end of the corrugated bump foil; and a bearing sleeve surrounding the corrugated bump foil, wherein: at least one of the sidewalls of at least one of the corrugations includes an undulation disposed between the outer and inner radial ends of the sidewall; and the undulation is defined by an undulation outer end and an undulation inner end.

Foil journal bearing with bump foil configured for self-adjusted radial positioning

A conical bearing includes a bearing sleeve, a bump foil, and a top foil. The bearing sleeve extends along an axis from a first open end to a second open end. The bearing sleeve has an axially tapered shape such that a first diameter of the bearing sleeve is greater than a second diameter of the bearing sleeve. An interior surface of the bearing sleeve has a non-circular profile. The bump foil is concentrically disposed within the bearing sleeve and includes bump foil pad segments extending circumferentially about the interior surface of the bearing sleeve. Each bump foil pad segment comprises a plurality of foil bumps and the plurality of foil bumps varies in stiffness along a circumference of the bump foil. The top foil is concentrically disposed within the bump foil and includes top foil pad segments extending circumferentially about an interior surface of the bump foil.

A thrust bearing arrangement includes a top plate extending about a rotation axis, a thrust plate extending about the rotation axis and axially offset from the top foil plate, and a bump plate. The thrust plate is orthogonal relative to the rotation axis. The bump foil plate extends about the rotation axis, is axially offset from the thrust plate, and has an annular portion and two or more bump plate foil portions. The annular portion of the bump plate is circumferentially interrupted by the bump plate foil portions of the bump plate. A turbine-driven alternator (i.e., a turbomachine) suitable for generating electrical power from process gas waste energy. In particular suitable for very high density process gases such as super critical CO2, R134a, R245fa, etc. The turboalternator comprises two separate machines, specifically, a turbine device and an alternator device operatively connected together by a coupling shaft. The rotating shaft assemblies for each machines on the turbine side and the alternator side are supported by hydrodynamic foil gas bearings. The foil gas bearings use process gas at the turbine side, enabling high-pressure operation (&#x2dc;3000 psia) and thrust load balancing. At the alternator side, cooling fluid is used in the foil gas bearings, enabling high-speed (&#x2dc;40,000 rpm), low-windage, oil-free operation with closed-loop shaft cooling.

Ultra high pressure turbomachine for waste heat recovery

This invention provides a blower design capable of high temperature operation due to use of a self-sustaining cooling scheme through a sealed motor housing in which a cooling circuit can be created, and the use of a thermal barrier across which a temperature gradient may be formed. The thermal barrier may be formed by a thermal choke plate assembly positioned between a hot side and a cold side of the blower to dissipate heat conducted from the hot side. Alternatively, the thermal barrier may be formed by an internal fan ring provided with the blower's rotating assembly to dissipate heat conducted from the blower's impeller. The thermal choke plate assembly and the fan ring may further be used in combination to block heat transfer by all modes between a hot side and a cold side of the blower.
