A heating system for use in the solar powered heating of water. In one embodiment, the heating system is used in conjunction with a solar water farm to desalinate water. The water farm can be utilized on a variety of scales and can be applied to agricultural farms for large scale reclamation of deserts.

A helmet for protecting the head of a user. The helmet includes an outer shell, an inner shell having padding that contacts the head and a cavity formed between the inner and the outer shells, wherein the cavity is filled with a fluid such as air. The helmet also includes a plurality of resilient strands located in the cavity and affixed between the outer and inner shells, wherein an impact force on the outer shell causes the head to impact the padding with a reaction force that compresses the cavity. Compression of the cavity pushes fluid through the strands to increase fluid friction and alter a velocity of the fluid. This decreases the energy of impact and consequently reduces an amount of force transferred to the head thereby protecting the head from normal and shear force.

Biomimetic and inflatable energy-absorbing helmet to reduce head injuries and concussions

A device for purifying water by solar power is described. The device has bottom and top sections, each being half-cylinders contacting one another along a flat edge to provide an elongated cylinder. The bottom section has an evacuated area with an optically transparent bottom surface that light can pass through to heat a liquid tray in the top section. A side-gutter directs water that condenses on an interior surface of the top section to an output port for collection.

Solar powered water purification device with cylindrical structure

A portable adjustable multiple end drill device comprises a rotary power source communicating with a plurality of end drill units. The device includes restraints for holding the rotary power source and a hearing rigidly attached to the restraints for rotating the device. The device includes two end-caps, each of which is connected to a respective arm directly or via at least one modular extension of a respective arm. The end-caps are also connected to guide bars and a splined power transmission shaft. The device imparts a set of rectilinearly aligned work areas of a work piece, which work areas are respectively and simultaneously drilled by the respective drill bits. A rectilinear position of each end drill unit can be adjusted mechanically. Each drill bit holder, or base, holding a respective drill bit or fastener bit is rotated by a system of bearing-journaled drive gears.

Portable adjustable multiple end drill device

A retractable rotor blade for a flying vehicle includes an interlink assembly having interconnected link base subassemblies, a helical ribbon assembly reinforcing the interlink assembly, and a flexible and elastic sleeve that covers the interlink and helical ribbon assemblies in extended and retracted states of the rotor blade. Each link base subassembly has a damper for dampening movement of the interlink assembly during extension and retraction of the rotor blade, a pair of retractable links by which the link base subassembly is interconnected with another of the link base subassemblies, a link hub, and a pair of locking arms housed in the link hub for locking the rotor blade in the extended state. The helical ribbon assembly has sequentially overlapped ribbons helically wound around the interlink assembly. The flexible and elastic sleeve has a flexible and elastic skin and elastic ribs for imparting rigidity to the flexible and elastic skin.

Retractable composite rotor blade assembly

A deployable and inflatable/deflatable fendering apparatus capable of providing protection for watercrafts and docks. The apparatus has an inflatable cylindrical body, an outer collar body, and a water reservoir with an inflating and deflating means. The collar body circumferentially surrounds the cylindrical body, and is made of abrasion resistant materials and protects the cylindrical body from punctures, tearing and abuse. The collar body may be inflatable or filled with foam-like material. The reservoir comprises a one-way valve, a series of ballasts and is attached to the cylindrical body and is expandable to provide stabilization of the fendering apparatus. The fendering apparatus can be deflated for storage.

Deployable and inflatable fendering apparatus and method

A testing apparatus is disclosed that includes a turntable, an upper scissor jack assembly and a lower scissor jack assembly positioned in parallel planes, about a longitudinal axis and affixed to a base. The apparatus is powered by at least three motors with supporting controllers. The lower assembly is affixed to the base mechanically via the turntable which allows the lower assembly to rotate with respect to the upper assembly. There are two loading plates attached to the hinges of each scissor jack. The test specimen is secured by the loading plate. Each scissor jack operates by a screw-gear powered by one of the motors. Upon energizing a stepper motor; the screw-gear positions a scissor jack to apply a tension or compression on the specimen. While subjected to tension or compression, the lower jack assembly can be rotated with respect to the upper assembly for in-plane shear loading.

Compact and stand-alone combined multi-axial and shear test apparatus

A page turner apparatus includes a book holder assembly, one or more page turning assemblies and a driver. Each page turning assembly includes a rotator portion and a page retention portion and is laterally movable and rotatable. The page retention portion includes a page retaining arm which is rotated to the right of an axis of rotation when the page turning assembly is moved to the right and rotated to the left of the axis of rotation when the page turning assembly is moved to the left. The driver is adapted to laterally move the at least one page turning assembly and, at the same time, rotate each page retaining arm.

A mobile robot generally including a first suction module, a second suction module and a hinge assembly pivotably connecting the suction modules together. Each of the suction modules includes a support frame defining a vacuum chamber and a vacuum unit supported on the support frame and communicating with the vacuum chamber. The vacuum unit includes a rotating impeller and an exhaust cowling surrounding the impeller. The impeller has an axis of rotation and is adapted to draw air from the vacuum chamber into the impeller in a direction generally parallel to the impeller axis of rotation and to discharge the drawn air in a direction substantially perpendicular to the impeller axis of rotation. The exhaust cowling is adapted to redirect the discharged air, whereby a thrusting force is applied to the support frame in a direction opposite of the direction of the drawn air from the vacuum chamber.

Modular wall climbing robot with transition capability

A testing apparatus having four-bar linkages pivotable to sleeves on opposite vertices with the sleeves of each vertex rotationally attached to each other. Links of each linkage are pivotally attached to loading plate assemblies securing a test specimen. During loading, the assemblies move toward or away from each other; thereby, applying compression or tension to the specimen. A pressure system fluidly impacts opposite faces of a piston of the assembly such that one of the faces is pressurized and impacts arms of the assembly for a sliding motion to move toward or away from the longitudinal axis of the apparatus thereby, applying a compression or tensile load on the specimen or augmenting the loads applied by the movement of the loading plate assemblies. The pressure system includes a controller connected to a reservoir, a pressurized source, a plurality of shutoff valves and pressure-adjustable check valves.

Biaxial and shear testing apparatus with force controls

A triaxial testing system of material properties having top and bottom joint assemblies that rotate about and move along a longitudinal axis in response to forces imparted by a testing machine. The joint assemblies are connected together by horizontal and vertical linkage assemblies. The horizontal and vertical linkage assemblies are connected to horizontal and vertical loading and clamping assemblies to thereby transfer in-plane and multi-axial loads from the testing machine and the joint assemblies to a material test specimen. The test specimen is rigidly clamped to the horizontal and vertical clamping assemblies. The bases and ends of the test specimen are shaped for clamping and axial loading. Rigid plates may be disposed over ends of composite test specimens for spatially stabilizing such specimens during testing. The test specimens may include devices to measure and record the axial and shear loads, displacement and strains imparted to the specimens during testing.

An apparatus for turning bound pages, the apparatus having a support assembly for holding the bound pages; a lifting assembly coupled to the support assembly and capable of lifting at least a portion of a page; a turnstile assembly, the turnstile assembly comprising a plurality of flippers; and a motor assembly secured to the support assembly and coupled to the turnstile assembly; wherein the turnstile assembly has a rest position in which one of the plurality of flippers is positioned across two opposed bound pages to hold the bound pages in an open condition; wherein the turnstile assembly is rotated by the motor assembly causing the lifting assembly to lift one of the pages and one of the plurality of flippers to rotate underneath the lifted page; and wherein the finger underneath the lifted page is rotated to turn the page and to place the turnstile in the rest position.

Automatic page turner with turnstile element

An apparatus for turning bound pages, the apparatus having a frame; a book support assembly coupled to the frame; at least one pickup arm coupled to the frame; a motor assembly coupled to the frame; and a conveyor assembly coupled to the frame. The conveyor assembly has a belt; a plurality of fingers coupled to the belt; and at least one actuator coupled to the belt. A subset of the plurality of fingers hold the book in an open condition. Upon rotation of the belt by the motor assembly, the at least one actuator causes the at least one pickup arm to lift a portion of a page while a subset of the plurality of fingers hold the bound pages in an open condition and turn the lifted page.
