This disclosure is related to systems, devices, processes, and methods to optimize a laser power boost amplitude, a laser power boost duration, or both in a heat-assisted data recording device, such as in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The amplitude and duration for the laser power boost may be determined for a specific portion of a write operation, such as a first sector of the write operation. During operation of a data storage device, the laser power boost may provide additional power to the laser for the specific portion. Once the laser power boost duration has elapsed, the data storage device may continue providing power to the laser at the normal power input range of the laser. The laser power boost settings may be determined on a per head per zone basis, per track basis, or another configuration.

Laser boost and duration optimization

A temperature compensation equation is generated during manufacture of a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) disk drive using initial total currents supplied to a laser diode of the disk drive at different initial operating temperatures. The total currents represent currents for recording data to or erasing data from the medium. The temperature compensation equation is stored in the disk drive, and updated, during field operation, using a subsequent total current associated with an operating temperature differing from the initial operating temperatures. The total current supplied to the laser diode for a subsequent write operation is adjusted using the updated temperature compensation equation in response to the operating temperature at the time of the subsequent write operation.

In-field laser calibration for heat-assisted magnetic recording head using temperature compensation equation

Systems and methods of laser bias calibration are presented. A preamplifier circuit may configure a laser current supplied to a laser emitter to be a first laser current of the plurality of laser currents during the writing of one or more first sectors. The preamplifier may further detect one or more gaps in a write power signal while the laser current of the laser emitter is configured to be the first laser current. In response to the detection of the one or more gaps in the write power signal, the preamplifier may configure the laser current supplied to the laser emitter to be a second laser current of the plurality of laser currents during the writing of one or more second sectors. The preamplifier circuit may be utilized in a heat assisted magnetic recording device.

Laser current calibration using preamplifier

A heat-assisted magnetic recording head is moved relative to a magnetic recording medium. The medium comprises a plurality of sectors. The sectors define a plurality of sector groups distributed around a circumference of the medium. The sectors of each sector group are written using different operational currents supplied to a laser diode of the head such that at least one sector from each sector group is written using one of the different operational currents. For each of the different operational currents, an average write performance metric is calculated for all sectors written at each of the different operational currents. A particular operational current of the different operational currents is determined that results in a best average write performance metric.

Laser calibration for heat-assisted magnetic recording head using interleaved laser current

A storage device includes a storage controller configured to operate a heat-assisted magnetic recording head to write data to a band of consecutive data tracks in a consecutive track order while selectively alternating a power level of the heat source when writing to some data tracks of the band.

Shingled magnetic recording for writing tracks of variable track width

A recording medium is written to using an energy source that heats the medium during the writing. A read error in a sector is determined when reading via a read transducer. While traversing a part of the recording medium that includes data, a write coil is activated before attempting to re-read the sector. The energy source does not heat the recording medium sufficiently to change a state of the data during the activation of the write coil. The activation of the write coil removes a magnetic instability of the read transducer.

Activating a magnetic writer to recover from read errors due to reader instability

Data is written to a recording medium via a read/write head. Subsequent to the writing, the data is read via a read transducer of a read/write head. An instability indicator is derived based on measurements performed while the reading the data. If the instability indicator exceeds a threshold, a current applied to a write coil of the read/write head is changed for subsequent write operations.

Changing write coil current in response to reader instability

A preamplifier circuit can include a control line dedicated to receive a control signal that corresponds to indicating a specific register of the preamplifier circuit, which can allow the preamplifier to switch between utilizing two or more registers to control a current output of the preamplifier circuit. The preamplifier circuit may also have a serial input to program multiple registers of the preamplifier circuit in a serial fashion. In some embodiments, the current output may be a laser bias current. The preamplifier may adjust an output current that drives a laser emitter based on a control signal indicating which specific registers controls the output current. Further, a controller, such as a system-on-chip controller, may selectively vary the control signal to affect the current output of the preamplifier circuit. These systems and methods may be particularly useful for lasers and heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR).

Laser bias current control

An operational laser power for a heat-assisted, magnetic recording head is selected based on a function of a write quality metric versus laser power. The write quality metric of data written to a magnetic recording medium is monitored at the operational laser power. Responsive to the write quality metric satisfying a threshold, a power difference between the operational laser power and an offset laser power is determined. The offset laser power corresponds to a point of the function where the write quality metric is approximately equal to the threshold. A maximum laser power is set for a calibration operation. The maximum laser power is based on the sum of the operational laser power and the power difference.

Selecting a maximum laser power for a calibration based on a previously measured function

A set of consecutive user data wedges are each located between consecutive servo wedges of a heat-assisted recording medium. Test data is written at least every other one of the consecutive data wedges using different laser power values. Based on reading the test data, a nominal laser power is selected for use by the read/write head.

Selecting laser power based on writing to a set of consecutive user data wedges

A first tone is written at a first frequency to outer tracks that surround an inner track of a magnetic recording medium. A second tone is written at a second frequency different from the first frequency to the inner track. The first and second frequencies are both lower than a frequency of an AC erase signal. A crosstrack profile of the inner track is determined based on reading amplitude of the second frequency via the read/write head.

Method and apparatus for writing test tracks on a magnetic recording medium

For each head in a collection of heat-assisted magnetic recording read/write heads, a reader width and a writer width is measured. A predicted life is determined for each head based on the respective reader width and writer width. In a first set of drives having relatively fewer heads per drive, a first subset of the heads having a higher value of the predicted life are used. In a second set of drives having relatively more heads per drive, a second subset of the heads having a lower value of the predicted life are used.

Sorting of HAMR read/write heads based on reader and writer widths

An apparatus and method involves a writer configured for heat-assisted magnetic recording of data to a magnetic storage medium. A controller is coupled to the writer. The controller and writer are configured to write data to a plurality of concentric bands of the medium each comprising a plurality of partially overlapping narrow data tracks and a wide track. The wide tracks of successive bands are positioned adjacent to one another with no intervening narrow data track therebetween.
