A method according to the invention comprises fixing a consumable electrode (1) with respect to a current carrying device (2), positioning it over a surface (4) of a part (5) to be fused, firing a welding arc (8) between the end face (3) of the electrode (1) and the surface (4) of the part (5). The electrode (1) is then fed to a fusion space (9) by swiftly bringing the current carrying device (2) close to the surface (4) of the part (5) at a speed exceeding the rate of fusion of the electrode (1).

A method of consumable electrode arc welding with the end of the electrode submerged into the molten pool wherein the maximum cross sectional dimension of the electrode end to be submerged into the molten pool is chosen so that it does not exceed twice the minimum dimension of this cross-section. Said dimensions are made to fit the required width of the weld by adopting the minimum dimension of said cross-section of less than the width but no less than half the width, for the same weld width required. The arc length is set below said minimum dimension, and the consumable electrode is fed at a speed lower than the welding speed, choosing the ratio of the consumable electrode feed speed to the welding speed, for the same weld width required, so that the greater the cross-sectional area of said end of the consumable electrode, the smaller is the ratio.

A method of multi-pass arc welding with a consumable electrode in a protective atmosphere for welding heavy-gauge metal with narrow grooving, wherein, according to the invention the initial electrode extension is adjusted to be greater than the depth of grooving of welded joint, a current supply conductor which supports the consumable electrode passing therethrough is placed in a permanent position above the welded joint, and the welding is conducted with the length of extension of consumable electrode decreasing upon each pass, the voltage applied to the current supply conductor, rate of feed of the consumable electrode and welding speed being reduced with the decrease in the length of extension of the consumable electrode.
