A filter cartridge includes a substantially cylindrical filter media having a first end and a second end wherein the second end has an opening adaptable to receive a fluid outlet. The filter media is adapted to allow fluid to pass from an exterior of the filter media to an interior space of the filter media. A divider is positioned adjacent to the exterior of the filter media, and the divider has a closed end connected to the first end of the filter media and an open end that is longitudinally-spaced from the second end of the filter media such that at least a portion of the filter media located adjacent to the second end of the filter media is not directly adjacent to the divider. The divider extends a majority of the distance from the first end to the second end of the filter media.

A support structure of a filter element for supporting a filter material that is adapted to filter a fluid includes a first frame portion and a second frame portion. The first frame portion has a plurality of radially-extending fingers that are longitudinally spaced from one another. The first frame portion is disposed entirely on an unfiltered side of the filter material. A second frame portion has a pair of longitudinally-extending support surfaces that are disposed in a spaced, facing relationship with respect to one another. The second frame portion is disposed entirely on a filtered side of the filter material. The radially-extending fingers of the first frame portion and each of the longitudinally-extending support surfaces of the second frame portion support the filter material to define a first radial channel. The radially-extending fingers of the first frame portion space the longitudinally-extending support surfaces of the second frame portion apart from one another.

The filter media is adapted to allow fluid to pass from an exterior of the filter media to an interior space of the filter media. The pressure relieving structure is disposed at an upper end of the filter media, and the pressure relieving structure opens when a predetermined pressure level is established across the filter media to maintain the predetermined pressure across the filter media.

The present invention provides a vertical housing having a fluid inlet for communicating the fluid into said housing and a fluid outlet for communicating the fluid downstream of the housing. A filter element is disposed within the housing between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet for filtering the fluid. The volume of air within the vertical housing is specifically determined in order to maintain a level of fluid which will indicate the general condition of the filter element.

The fluid filter assembly of the present invention provides a vertical, transparent housing having a fluid inlet for communicating a fluid into the housing and a fluid outlet for communicating fluid downstream of said housing. A filter element is disposed within the housing between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet for filtering the fluid. In &lsqb;the preferred&rsqb; a first embodiment, a &lsqb;frusto-conical&rsqb; divider is connected to the top of the filter element and extends downward adjacent a bottom portion of the filter element wherein the fluid from the inlet rises between the filter element and the inside of the divider and between the outside of the divider and an inside surface of the housing. A relief valve is provided in the top of the filter element and is in communication with the unfiltered and filtered side of the filter element. The relief valve opens at a predetermined pressure level across the filter element thereby raising the fluid level and providing a practical &lsqb;visual&rsqb; indicator that the filter element may be replaced &lsqb;needs replacement&rsqb;.
