Ion beam delivery equipment and ion beam delivery method

A therapy system using an ion beam, which can shorten the time required for positioning a couch (patient). The therapy system using the ion beam comprises a rotating gantry provided with an ion beam delivery unit including an X-ray tube. An X-ray detecting device having a plurality of X-ray detectors can be moved in the direction of a rotation axis of the rotating gantry. A couch on which a patient is lying is moved until a tumor substantially reaches an extension of an ion beam path in the irradiating unit. The X-ray tube is positioned on the ion beam path and the X-ray detecting device is positioned on the extension of the ion beam path. With rotation of the rotating gantry, both the X-ray tube emitting an X-ray and the X-ray detecting device revolve around the patient. The X-ray is emitted to the patient and detected by the X-ray detectors after penetrating the patient. Tomographic information of the patient is formed based on signals outputted from the X-ray detectors. Information for positioning the couch is generated by using the tomographic information.

The invention is intended to confirm whether the SOBP (spread-out Bragg peak) width is a desired value in real time during beam irradiation, and to improve safety in treatment. Ion beam delivery equipment comprises a beam generator including a synchrotron, an RMW (range modulation wheel) device for forming an SOBP width of an ion beam extracted from the beam generator, a beam delivery nozzle including a reference dose monitor and a main dose monitor which are installed respectively upstream and downstream of the RMW device in the direction of travel of the ion beam, and an SOBP width computing unit for computing the SOBP width of the ion beam, which is formed by the RMW device, based on values detected by both the reference dose monitor and the main dose monitor.

The present invention provides a rapid indexing spindle drive and control apparatus for installation as a retrofit on a cam controlled automatic screw machine to provide the capabilities of variable spindle speed and direction as well as rapid indexing of the spindle in relation to the tool head of the screw machine for stationary tool operations. The apparatus includes a variable speed, low mass servo-motor mounted on the headstock of the machine and connected to the spindle by a 1:1 drive ratio timing belt and pulley system. A cam shaft revolution sensor is mounted adjacent to the screw machine cam shaft and is driven by the cam shaft through a second 1:1 drive ratio timing belt and pulley system. Electronically connected to the servo-motor and the cam shaft revolution sensor is a computer control system which includes a computer and an operator interface unit whereby cam shaft positions and spindle drive commands corresponding to specific cam shaft positions are entered by the machine operator. In operation, the computer receives signals constantly generated by the cam shaft revolution sensor and a resolver in the servo-motor which signals correspond to the rotational positions of the cam shaft and the servo-motor respectively. These signals are compared to the values entered from the operator interface unit and the appropriate spindle commands are issued by the computer at the same points for each revolution of the cam shaft.

A spindle brake apparatus for add on attachment to automatic Swiss screw machines, comprising an idler pulley release assembly, a spindle brake assembly and a cam actuated control assembly employing the existing cam shaft timing and control means of such machines to stop spindle rotation so that cross milling operations may be performed. The apparatus is operated by compressed air in response to cam actuated valves to first release an idler pulley then apply the brake to stop spindle rotation. After a stationary operation is performed, compressed air is released thereby releasing the brake followed by reengagement of the idler pulley to reestablish spindle rotation.
