A known hydraulic vehicle brake system has an anti-skid valve assembly. By this assembly, the at least one wheel brake can be temporarily disconnected from the master brake cylinder and connected to one inlet of a return pump, which furnishes the quantities of pressure fluid flowing out of the wheel brakes both to a damper chamber and, via a damper throttle, to the master brake cylinder and/or the at least one wheel brake. The disadvantage is that all of the pressure fluid pumped by the return pump can sometimes reach the master brake cylinder, disagreeably moving the brake pedal in the direction of its outset position. This can annoy a driver and should be avoided. The improved vehicle brake system has a valve, which in anti-skid operation can be blocked, located between the damper throttle and the master brake cylinder and also has a bypass throttle bypassing the valve. As a result, during anti-skid operation, the brake pedal is not displaced to such an annoying extent.

A vehicle brake system having at least two brake pressure lines, via which a master brake cylinder communicates with wheel brake cylinders, at least one valve is incorporated in each brake pressure line to close the brake pressure lines in the event of anti-skid control. Each brake pressure line is also assigned a return pump, which bypasses the valve. At least one valve, in the currentless state or with the absence of pressure buildup in a brake pressure line, blocks this brake pressure line and communicates with a control unit for pulsed opening upon pressure buildup in the brake pressure line. Because of the additional disposition of a pressure valve and check valve in a bypass around the pulsed valve, expensive pressure reducers are dispensed with, with little additional expense in the anti-skid control system. Even if the anti-skid control system fails, stability during braking is assured.

An automotive engine forming part of a motor vehicle is controlled to avoid slipping or spinning of a driven wheel by controlling the maximum rate of change of fuel which can be supplied to the engine, for example, by limiting the speed of deflection of a throttle flap (6) driven by a servo motor (7). The deflection speed, limited for example by a voltage divider (14) can be controlled as a function of operating parameters of the engine or the vehicle, for example, vehicle speed (V.sub.F), engine speed (n.sub.M), engine loading or a percentage of engine loading, actual wheel slip, actual angle or deflection position of the throttle flap, and the like. Further, non-linearities between deflection of an operator actuated pedal, such as a gas pedal (1) and actual deflection of the control flap (6) can be compensated for, for example, in a difference forming circuit (9) providing an output error signal for the servo motor (7) or by software, e.g. by recourse to non-linear characteristics stored in a table or graph. The duration of limiting can be determined by timing circuit connected to a terminal (p) for example, on the voltage divider (14). The system can be instrumented electrically (FIG. 2) or, for example, hydraulic-electrically (FIG. 3).

To prevent slipping or spinning of a driven wheel which, selectively, can be braked or supplied with reduced torque from a vehicle engine, a reference speed is determined against which slipping or tendency to slip is measured. The reference value for slip measuring, derived from non-driven or rolling wheels, is tested for physically impossible conditions and, if such physically impossible conditions obtain, they are disregarded when determining slipping or tendency to slip. Proper speed values can be stored, utilized for subsequent measurement, directly or modified, which may also be made speed dependent, or dependent on differences between the speeds of two rolling wheels.
