A solid NaCl or KCl electrolyte electrochemical concentration cell assembly (20) for measuring monitored gases (38) containing oxygen or a chlorine containing component is divided into two identical alkali ion conductive half cells (22) and (24) where each half cell has solid electrolyte (23) and (25) that consists essentially of NaCl, KCl, or their mixture and is secured to opposite surfaces of the closed end of a solid membrane (36) exhibiting sodium or potassium ion conductivity. The membrane (36) effectively isolates the monitored gases (38) contacting one half cell from a reference gas environment (40) contacting the other half cell.

Chloride containing solid electrolyte gas sensing apparatus

An optical fiber moisture sensor is prepared by coating an optical fiber with a thin film of plasma polymerized hexamethyldisiloxane and ammonia, approximately 1-2 .mu.m thick. The light transmission characteristics of such a coated optical fiber change as a function of moisture conditions in an environment to which the coating is exposed. Accordingly, the coated optical fiber may be utilized by sensing changes in moisture conditions in an environment by being placed in the environment, causing light to be transmitted through the fiber and detecting changes in the light transmitted through the fiber as a function of the moisture conditions in the environment.

Disclosed is a method of making a continuous mixed oxide thin film. A composition is prepared of an alkoxide source of one of the metals in the mixed oxide, a chelate source of a second metal in the mixed oxide, sufficient alcohol to solubilize sources of all metals in said mixed oxide and about 1 to about 2 moles of water per mole of mixed oxide. The composition is applied to a substrate and the coating on the substrate is heated to at least about 500.degree. C. to evaporate the solvent and produce the mixed oxide film on the substrate.

Oxygen ion and oxy-anion conductive solid electrolyte, electrochemical cells are combined to form a single gas measuring apparatus having a common internal gas reference and developing electrical signals from which the partial pressure of oxygen and an anhydride of a monitored gas environment can be determined.

In a gas analyzer employing a disc-shaped oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte cell, having electrodes disposed on opposite surfaces thereof, and secured at its edge within a tubular member by noble metal braze, a non-conducting ceramic layer is disposed between the solid electrolyte material and the braze to minimize cell drift which could otherwise occur if the braze interacted as a cell 'electrode'.

Technique for reducing solid electrolyte cell drift

A gaseous mixture of oxygen and fuel (combustibles) is supplied to first and second electrodes disposed on opposite surfaces of an oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte member wherein the electrodes are composed of different materials each exhibiting a different catalytic action on the gaseous mixture at a given temperature. The difference in oxygen potentials established at the respective electrodes as a result of the dissimilar catalytic action produces oxygen ion conductivity in the solid electrolyte cell which produces an electrical signal the magnitude of which is indicative of the combustible present in the mixture, i.e., methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc.

Combustibles sensor

A high temperature solid electrolyte electrochemical cell is operated as a combustibles sensor in an oxygen containing atmosphere. The electrodes of the solid electrolyte electrochemical cell consist of a catalytic material such as platinum. The resistance of the solid electroltye electrochemical cell is such that it changes exponentially with inverse absolute temperature. When subjected to an oxygen/fuel environment, combustion occurs at the catalytic electrodes resulting in a temperature increase at the solid electrolyte electrochemical cell which results in a significant resistance change. This resistance change is monitored as an indication of the fuel or combustible content of the oxygen/fuel environment.
