Direct injection internal combustion engine

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection comprising at least two adjacent inlet valves ( ) per cylinder, a number of outlet valves ( ), an essentially coaxial spark plug ( ), an injection valve ( ) and a piston ( &prime;). The aim of the inventive engine is to provide an improved mixture preparation which is characterized by low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. To this end, the injection valve ( ) is arranged between two of the adjacent inlet valves ( ) and the section of the cylinder wall adjacent to said inlet valves ( ). in addition, the piston ( &prime;) has a longitudinally extended combustion chamber cavity ( ), whereby the combustion chamber cavity ( ) essentially extends along the front surface of the piston ( &prime;) in the direction of the vertical projection of an injection stream (E) exiting from the injection valve ( ). Said cavity also comprises a step ( ) which essentially runs in a transversal direction.

The invention relates to a method for improving the thorough mixing of the exhaust gas/fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine (,), whereby the exhaust gas stream is at least temporarily impinged upon by an increased exhaust-gas mass flow when additional fuel is supplied. According to said method, during the exhaust stroke, when the exhaust valve (,) or exhaust valves are open, the additional fuel is fed directly into the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine (,). The invention also provides for a device to carry out said method, according to which the additional fuel is injected during the exhaust stroke when the exhaust valve (,) or exhaust valves (,) are open by means of at least one injection nozzle (,) positioned in the combustion chamber. Both the method and the device are especially simple and cost-efficient.
