There is disclosed a chuck assembly for internally holding a hollow substrate having an open end including: (a) a body including an end section having a width narrower than that of the inner width of the substrate to permit insertion of the end section through the substrate open end into the substrate interior; and (b) a compressible spring coiled around a portion of the end section, wherein prior to compression the spring has an outer width larger than that of the inner width of the substrate, wherein upon insertion of the end section of the body into the substrate the spring is compressed by contact with the substrate inner surface resulting in the chuck assembly holding the substrate by the force generated against the substrate inner surface by the spring in opposition to the compression.

There is disclosed a substrate reclaim method comprising directing laser energy at a coating covering a part of an outer surface of a substrate, wherein the outer surface has a shiny finish, thereby removing with the laser energy all of the coating on the outer surface and etching with the laser energy a portion of the outer surface to change the etched outer surface portion from a shiny finish to a matte finish.

A laser ablation apparatus includes a nozzle, disposed through a housing, wherein the nozzle has: (i) a nozzle housing comprised of a bottom surface; (ii) a first orifice defined by the bottom surface; (iii) a second orifice defined by the bottom surface; (iv) a first passageway defined by the nozzle housing in communication with the first orifice; and (v) a second passageway defined by the nozzle housing in communication with the second orifice, wherein the portion of the second passageway adjacent the second orifice forms an angle .theta..sub.3 with the portion of the first passageway adjacent the first orifice, wherein the angle .theta..sub.3 is effective for directing a first fluid stream through the second orifice at the surface of the enclosed substrate portion to facilitate removal of the coating in the form of coating debris during or subsequent to exposure of the coating of an enclosed substrate portion to high energy radiation. A high energy radiation generating apparatus and a first fluid stream generating apparatus are coupled to the nozzle. A second fluid stream nozzle is disposed in a direction for directing a second fluid stream against the first fluid stream to keep coating debris inside the housing. Exhausting apparatus is coupled to the housing.

A process for treating a coated substrate to reduce the thickness of the coating involves directing a laser beam at a predetermined surface portion of the substrate to remove part of the coating. The process can be used to treat a coated photoreceptor to precisely reduce the thickness of the coating in a predetermined region.

A process for treating a predetermined portion of a coating on a photoreceptor to remove at least part of the coating involves directing a source of high energy irradiation at the coating in the presence of at least one fluid medium to remove at least part of the coating from the predetermined portion of the coating. The source of high energy irradiation is preferably a laser beam, ultrasonic energy, or a source of high intensity heat. The at least one fluid medium is preferably at least one gas jet, liquid jet or a liquid solvent.

C., and means mounted on the mandrel to apply compressive pressure to the disk shaped member to increase the length of the circumference of the circular outermost edge.
