A system and method for controlling an appliance are provided. The system includes a plurality of sensing devices and a plurality of appliance control devices. The sensing devices are locatable in a selected area with each device wirelessly transmitting a first status message and a second status message. Each of the plurality of appliance control devices has a wireless receiver that continuously monitors a transmission spectrum for wireless status messages, has a decryption device that decrypts any received encrypted messages, provides an ON and OFF output, and provides one of the ON and OFF outputs upon receiving a first status message and the other of the ON and OFF outputs upon receiving a second status message.

Bridge between security system and appliances

A system, method process and apparatus is presented for interfacing digital and audio communications in a security system, comprising, a control panel having one or more first radio receiver/transceivers and one or more remote alarm sensors coupled to the control panel and the control panel receiving one or more digital reports from each one or more remote alarm sensors, a wireless interface device having one or more second radio receiver/transceivers for receiving the digital reports from the control panel unit and for establishing two-way voice communication between the control panel and the wireless interface unit, one or more telephone units coupled to the wireless interface device for communicating with the wireless interface unit and at least one POTS and/or IP network modem device coupled to the wireless interface device, an IP network, wherein, the wireless interface device includes a communication processing unit for transmitting one or more digital reports to a monitoring service via the POTS and/or IP network and for establishing two-way voice communication between the control panel and the monitoring service via a voice channel connection.

A method and apparatus for controlling an appliance. The method includes the steps of a security system within a secured area, said security system having a wireless transmitter transmitting status messages including at least a first encrypted message that the security system in armed and a second encrypted message that the security system is disarmed, an appliance control device having a wireless receiver and a decryption unit, the wireless receiver receiving the first and second encrypted messages, the decryption unit decrypting the first encrypted message to recover the armed status message and decrypting the second encrypted message to recover the disarmed status message and an appliance associated with the secured area and controlled by the appliance control device, the appliance entering a relatively low energy consuming mode in response to the appliance control device receiving the armed message and the appliance entering a relatively high energy consuming mode in response to the appliance control device receiving the disarmed message.

A security system, such as in a home or other building, includes a broadcast band RF transmitter for transmitting an audio message that can be received by a user on a common home or car radio, for example. The audio message may be provided in response to a command that is transmitted to the security system by a user from a wireless key fob or the like. The user command may instruct the security system to arm or disarm itself, for instance. The audio message, which can be received on a selected channel on a car's radio receiver, informs the user that the command has been executed. The audio message may include a voice message such as 'system armed' or 'system disarmed', a musical passage, a beep, chirp, or the like.

A personal security apparatus includes a transmitting device having an event detector initiating different signals which indicate different event types. A transceiver receives the signals from the transmitting device and interprets each signal as corresponding to a particular event type. The transceiver sends respective event type alert signals to a remote monitoring device. The remote monitoring device provides a plurality of respective event type indicators for each of the event type alert signals received.

A safety light is activated by a wireless signal from a control panel in a home security system is response to detection of a fire by the system. The safety light alerts rescuers of rooms in a home in which children may be located. The light may be window, door or wall-mounted, and have a single, or dual opposing, backlit faces. The backlit face includes a logo and/or text that is quickly recognized by rescuers. For example, a logo of a firefighter carrying a baby may be used with the text 'tot rescue'. The safety light may communicate status information to the control panel, such as a low battery condition or a tamper alert. A tamper alert switch detects tampering with the housing of the safety light or its installation. Additional safety lights provide ambient illumination and directional information to an exit.

A wireless security system includes a control panel, a radio frequency receiver hardwired to the control panel, a plurality of wireless sensors having a standardized data output for communicating with the radio frequency receiver as well as a proximity reader. The apparatus also includes a transmitter hardwired to the proximity reader and the transmitter is configured to communicate with the receiver. The apparatus also includes a proximity device configured to cooperate with the proximity reader. A common communications protocol is utilized by both the proximity device and the wireless sensors. The invention also includes the method for controlling a security system which includes using a common communications protocol to communicate with both the proximity reader and the wireless sensors.

Tracking, presence verification, and locating features are incorporated into a security system that includes a user interface device with a display, keypad and associated transceiver. Wireless RF electronic tags are attached to different objects, e.g., an inanimate object, or a living being such as a child or pet. To verify the presence of an object associated with a tag, the user instructs the user interface device to transmit a wireless signal to the tag. The tag responds, when within range, by returning a wireless signal. In another aspect, a person is detected such as at the entry to a home, and a low-power transmitter at the entry sends a signal to the electronic tag. The electronic tag responds by transmitting data to the security system to cause it to take a desired action. The presence of a person, such as a child, in an unauthorized area can trigger an alarm.
