Ribbon cassettes for typewriters or office machines of similar construction are subject to differnt structural requirements and primarily they are to be easily exchangeable in a one-hand operation. Since additionally the ribbon cassettes are also designed as disposable components, many still functional individual parts are also discarded. To avoid this, ribbon cassettes are known which have exchangeable ribbon spools. It is the object of the invention to provide a reloadable ribbon cassette in which the exchange of ribbon spools (4, 5) is possible with few manipulations. The removal of the spent ribbon spools (4, 5) should here be possible without soiling the fingers. This problem is solved in that the take-up spool (5) and the supply spool (4) are arranged to be freely placeable onto bearing pins (11, 12) in the bottom member (6) and the movable parts for guiding and transporting the ribbon (8) in the bottom member (6), which has a cup-shaped configuration, are mounted on one side and, except for the take-up spool (5) and the supply spool (4) which are freely placeable onto the bearing pins (11, 12), are arranged to be arrestable against falling out of the cassette housing if the cover (2) is open. This permits exchange of the ribbon spools (4, 5) with few manipulations without the operator performing this exchange soiling his/her fingers. The exchange of ribbon spools (4, 5) is also possible for less experienced operators not having special skills.

A reloadable ribbon cassette system for typewriters or office machines of similar construction employs a bottom housing in which an exchangeable supply spool core for the ribbon and an exchangeable take-up spool core can be rotatably mounted. To facilitate the reloading process a cover plate is placed onto the top face of the ribbon coiled on the supply spool core, the cover plate inserted into the bottom housing member along with the supply spool core and ribbon when they are loaded. The cover plate has a contact surface for helping to steady a fastening element disposed at the free end of the ribbon during reloading. The cover plate projects beyond the ribbon coil at least in the region of the contact shelf to prevent accidental removal of the first few turns of the coiled ribbon in axial direction. The cover plate unequivocally gives a starting point for a guide pin which is detachably connected to the fastening element, the guide pin being used for threading the ribbon around a ribbon path to the take-up spool core.

Reloadable ribbon cassette system

An end-of-ribbon sensing device for an office machine, which machine includes a printing station for receiving a nonreusable ribbon which is displaceable through the printing station and which has a scannable marking at its trailing end. The device includes: a receiving member mounted at the printing station for receiving the replaceable member; a ribbon scanning unit carried by the receiving member and having scanning elements for scanning the scannable marking disposed at the end of the ribbon and for generating a signal upon scanning of the scannable marking; a control circuit connected to the scanning unit for processing the signal generated by the scanning unit so as to generate a ribbon end signal; a covering element for selectively covering the scanning elements: and a support member supporting the covering element and carried by the receiving member, the support member being maintained in a first position, when a replaceable member is not present at the receiving member, in which the covering element covers the scanning elements, and the support member being movable in response to reception of a replaceable member by the receiving member into a second position in which the covering element is displaced so as to expose the scanning elements to the ribbon, the support member being returned to the first position upon removal of a replaceable member and the covering element being constructed for cleaning the scanning elements during return of the support member from the second position to the first position.

A ribbon cassette for an office machine, composed of: a cassette housing removably mountable in the machine, the housing having an entrance opening, an exit opening, an openable cover and elements constituting deflection points; a supply spool and a take-up spool having a core, each of the spools being removably mounted in the cassette housing; a carbon ribbon initially wound in the form of a coil on the supply spool, the ribbon having a leading end at the outer surface of the coil to be received by the take-up spool core to permit the ribbon to be wound up on the take-up spool while being unwound from the supply spool; and a fastening member secured to the leading end of the ribbon for threading the ribbon around the deflection points; and wherein the core is formed for enabling the fastening member to be fixed thereto to aid winding of the ribbon on the take-up spool.

A feed mechanism for advancing an ink ribbon, supported in a cartridge which is inserted into a typing machine, in feeding steps whose length is determined in dependence upon the type of the ribbon, the mechanism including: a feed roller rotatably mounted in the cartridge for engaging the ribbon to advance it in feeding steps, the roller being selected from a plurality of rollers having respectively different diameters on the basis of the type of the ribbon; a driving device mounted in the machine and including a pressure roller movable into a position against the feed roller when the cartridge is inserted in the machine; and a mechanism for rotating the feed roller in angular steps for advancing the ribbon in corresponding feeding steps, which mechanism is settable for causing each angular step of rotation of the feed roller to have a selected one of at least two different magnitudes, each magnitude corresponding to a respectively different ribbon feeding step length, and is coupled to the pressure roller in a manner to be set to produce angular rotation steps of a selected magnitude in dependence on the position of the pressure roller when it is in its position against the feed roller, whereby the magnitude of each ribbon feeding step is automatically determined as a function of the diameter of the selected feed roller.

Adjustable ribbon feed rates dependent upon ribbon type for ink ribbon

In a ribbon cartridge for an office writing machine, which cartridge includes a housing having a base plate, a supply reel and a take-up reel mounted in the housing, a carbon ribbon wound around the reels and mounted to be conducted from the supply reel to the take-up reel while traveling over a guidance path having a first portion located outside of the housing and a second portion located inside the housing and extending between the first portion and the take-up reel, the housing being provided with an entrance opening located between the first and second portions of the guidance path for the passage of the ribbon into the housing, and the cartridge further including guide elements located for guiding the ribbon along the second path portion and a transport roller located along the second path portion for transporting the ribbon to the take up reel, the base plate is provided with recesses for damping noise generated during operation of the machine, and the cartridge is constructed for preventing particles which are detached from the ribbon over the second portion of the guidance path from falling out of the housing.

Sound damping ribbon cartridge for a typewriter or similar office machine

A typing device has a type disc which includes a plurality of bars each carrying a character and which is rotatable about an axis through predetermined angles for successively setting selected characters in a printing position. The typing device further has a hammer for impacting the bar of the selected character for pressing the selected character against a record carrier supported by a platen. The type disc carries a plurality of stops; each stop is assigned to a different character. The stops are arranged at least at two different distances from the disc axis, dependent upon the printing surface area of the associated character. The typing device further has an elastic lever, one end of which is movable into an abutting engagement with the stop of the associated character situated in the printing position. Another end of the elastic lever is connected to the hammer so that the hammer and the elastic lever are moved simultaneously by a hammer drive. The elastic lever is arranged to absorb, upon engagement with the respective stop, one part of the kinetic energy imparted by the hammer drive for reducing the force with which the character is pressed against the record carrier. The amount of the absorbed kinetic energy is a function of the distance of the respective stop from the disc axis.
