A portable timing device stores selectable user, client and activity data. The device has a memory which stores user selected information relating to a user, client and activity along with corresponding start and stop times. The system communicates with a central billing computer over an appropriate two way port which reads and writes to the memory in the device. Also, disclosed is a method for recording provider, client and services in real time employing a streamlined and efficient sequencing of operation.

A sensor system for detecting gear modes of an automobile transmission is disposed about a detent lever internally within the transmission case. The system includes an encoder capable of generating a magnetic field disposed on or about a detent lever, and at least one sensor, such as a Hall-effect sensor, disposed opposite the encoder. The encoder is a magnetic strip having at least one track encoded thereon, wherein the sensor is juxtaposed with the encoded track such that it produces a digital signal representative of the position of the encoder means and the corresponding gear mode.

A high resolution sensor for internal combustion engines has symmetric and asymmetric magnetic encoders mounted on a support plate for synchronous rotation with the engine. Hall-effect sensor devices monitor the magnetic fields of the encoders and transmit signals to an Electronic Engine Control Unit. Ignition and fuel injection timing are deduced from the positions of the magnetic encoders. The encoders are magnetized on a fixture which establishes the size, strength, and location of each pole.

Magnetic encoder and sensor system for internal combustion engines

A magnetic field source is mounted on one race of a two-race radial or thrust bearing. The race with the magnetic field source rotates. The other race does not rotate. A magnetic field sensor is mounted on a flexible arm of a rigid arm support. The arm support with its flexible arm does not rotate but the flexible arm may flex in response to movement of either of the races or the flexible arm support member so that the magnetic field sensor is always kept a constant predetermined distance from the magnetic field source. The number of times alternate magnetic poles on the rotating race is sensed by the sensor per unit of time indicates the speed of the rotating race.

One thrust race of a two-race thrust bearing has a magnetic field sensor mounted on a lip extending axially from the outside diameter of the thrust race. The other thrust race has a magnetic field source. The race with the magnetic field source rotates; the race with the sensor is fixed. The number of times alternate magnetic poles on the rotating thrust race is sensed by the sensor per unit of time indicates the speed of the rotating thrust race.

A permanently magnetized magnet associated with the bearing provides a magnetic field which is detected by a detector in the bearing. The relative rotation of one part of the bearing, such as a rotatable shaft or rotatable race, with respect to a second part of the bearing, such as a race, is indicated by the detector.
