An improved packaging device designed for the filling of flexible, tubular casing and for the sealing of the casing in discreet lengths which may then be further processed or packaged. The device includes a mounting assembly having a floor mounted frame with a rotatable platform supported by the frame. Adjacent the frame and platform is a device for feeding product through a product horn into casing which is shirred on the horn. The platform includes a plurality of specially designed clippers arranged in a circular array. As filled casing is discharged from the feeding mechanism it is directed tangentially into the circular array of rotating clippers which are equally spaced from each other. The clippers sequentially operate to gather the casing, apply spaced, double clips to the casing, sever the connection between adjacent clips, and to then discharge the packaged link from the device.

A packaging machine applies clips to rope sections of filled tubular casing to form clubs. In such a machine, a new clipping mechanism includes a piston-in-piston structure. Clip jaws are linked to the external piston to be driven by that piston. A punch is affixed to the internal piston. The punch is driven partially by the external piston as the internal piston 'rides along', and partially by the internal piston. The punch is guided, in part, by punch guides present in the clip jaws, when closed. Also in the packaging machine, a cut-off knife is driven, and voider plates are driven in part by non-cylindrical and therefore consistently aligned pistons in non-cylindrical cylinders.

An improved mechanism controls gathering plates for an apparatus for the creation of filled tubing products. The plate comprise a longitudinally stationary pair of plates and a longitudinally movable pair of plates. The apparatus includes a cylinder, a piston and an adjustable stop. The cylinder is attached to the movable gaathering plates. The fixed piston rod extends within the cylinder and has a piston within the cylinder. The stop is for stopping movement of the cylinder relative to the piston under the action of fluid moved into the cylinder. The stop is mounted on the cylinder and is adjustable to provide for adjustment of the stopping position of the cylinder relative to the piston.

Mechanism for control of gathering plates for a double clipper apparatus

The apparatus includes a loop attachment device and a casing brake and horn having portions moveable relative to each other for a stuffing position and a clipping position. In the clipping position, a reduced tension is applied and the loop is attached with the clip.

Apparatus for the high speed manufacture of elongated tubular film products from lengths of flexible, flat films. Film is unspooled passed over a forming collar, and onto a tube. On the tube, the film has a circular cross-section, with overlapped edges. A sizing ring correctly sizes the overlap. The film is immediately fed into a heating unit, where a closed-loop band contacts the overlap and heats the film to form a sealed seam. The film is advanced through the heating unit by boggie mounted drive belts. From the heating unit, the film is advanced into accumulation adjacent a casing brake.

High speed contact sealer

A clip applying machine for tubular casings which comprises opposing clip jaw members that pivot toward each other to gather the casing and position a die member on one side of the casing. A punch member is advanced from the other side of the casing to feed a clip around the casing and against the die member. The jaw members are pivoted by a first piston/cylinder mechanism which is pivotally connected to the jaw members and the punch is advanced by a second piston positioned within the first piston. In this manner the punch and the second piston are driven in two stages, i.e. first by and with the first piston and then by air pressure that directly and further advances the second piston.

A casing brake is disclosed for use in combination with a generally tubular stuffing horn over which casing is released for filling with material discharged from the horn. The brake is of the type which includes a rigid housing which retains a deformable insert that fits over the horn and cooperates with the horn to engage the casing against the horn. Thus casing brake includes a first annular insert that has a throughbore with a circumferential groove on the inside of the throughbore with a second annular inner member which is comprised of a helical coil positioned within the groove, the inner member preferably being comprised of polytetrafluoroethylene with the outer member being elastically deformable with respect to the inner member to thereby alter the effective diameter of the groove causing an increase or decrease the diameter of the coil which, in turn, more loosely or more tightly grips the outside surface of the casing as it passes over the horn.

In a stuffing machine for stuffing comminuted material in casing to form chubs, the machine comprising a stuffing horn for the passage of comminuted material and for the provision of casing, a casing brake for controlling casing withdrawal from the horn in relation to the exiting of comminuted material from the horn means, a clip applying apparatus for applying upstream and downstream clips to the casing and a looper assembly for applying loops to the upstream clip. The machine also includes a product support comprising a helical spring mounted adjacent the discharge end of the casing brake defining and extending along the path of the stuffed casing, the spring having a diameter sized to permit the spring to surround the stuffed casing exiting the casing brake and having a lateral strength to support the stuffed casing.

Apparatus for simultaneously placing a collogen film from a flat sheet of collogen film about the outside circumference of a product and placing netting about the outside circumference of the product. In one aspect, the apparatus comprises a base, a manifold assembly, a center product discharge tube, a collogen forming collar, a discharge horn and a netting support cylinder. Additionally, the apparatus may comprise a netting derucker, a discharge conveyor a product end clipper and other components and elements. The manifold assembly is mounted to the base, and the center product discharge tube extends from the manifold assembly. The collogen forming collar forms the flat sheet into a cylindrical shape, is concentric with the discharge tube and is mounted in association with the discharge tube. The discharge horn extends along a portion of the discharge tube away from the manifold assembly and is mounted in association with the discharge tube. The netting support cylinder is concentric with and outside the discharge tube and discharge horn, and is mounted in association with the discharge tube and discharge horn. The netting support cylinder and discharge horn, away from the manifold assembly, terminate substantially coterminally. Product material flows through the manifold assembly and product discharge tube and collogen film and netting is simultaneously placed about the product as product material exits the product discharge tube.

A stuffing horn mechanism for chub packaging machinery, utilized in association with such machinery to produce chub products by stuffing of casing with comminuted material. The stuffing horn mechanism comprises a telescoping stuffing horn, a comminuted material reservoir, and reservoir volume varying apparatus. The telescoping horn is variable in volume during telescoping, and the reservoir is in communication with the stuffing horn. The reservoir volume varying apparatus is operatively connected to the stuffing horn, for varying the volume of the reservoir in inverse relation to the volume of the stuffing horn during telescoping.

Pivoting horn

An improved, integral, U-shaped metal clip for use as a closure includes a textured surface to enhance the strength of the clip and to evidence tampering. The texturing may be effected by one or more working steps on the surface.
