A thin film semiconductor and a method of its fabrication use induced crystallization and aggregation of a nanocrystal seed layer to form a merged-domain layer. The nanocrystal seed layer is deposited onto a substrate surface within a defined boundary. A reaction temperature below a boiling point of a reaction solution is employed. A thin film metal-oxide transistor and a method of its production employ the thin film semiconductor as a channel of the transistor. The merged-domain layer exhibits high carrier mobility.

Fused nanocrystal thin film semiconductor and method

Crystal growth performed in situ facilitates interconnection of prefabricated nano-structures. The nano-structures are immersed in a growth solution having a controllable saturation condition. Changing the saturation condition of the solution modifies a size of the immersed nanowires. The solution includes a solute of a nano-structure precursor material. The saturation condition is changed to one or both etch material from a surface of the nano-structures and initiate crystal growth on the nano-structure surface. A nano-structure interconnection system includes the growth solution and equipment to deposit the prefabricated nano-structures on a substrate. An interconnected structure includes a plurality of nano-structures disposed on a substrate in a cluster and a liquid phase-grown crystal lattice on surfaces of the nano-structures to form physical interconnections between the plurality. An ink formulation includes the plurality of nano-structures suspended in the growth solution.

A thermal optical switching cell for controlling the transmission of light through optical channels that includes a switching conduit containing a working fluid that is index of refraction matched to the optical channels and an amount of light diverting material that is substantially immiscible in the working fluid and is not index of refraction matched to the optical channels. Micro heaters generate pressure pulses in the working fluid for moving the light diverting material between switch states.

A component for a printhead of an inkjet printer includes a flexible substrate and oxide island heat barriers. The oxide islands allow the flexible substrate to be bent without cracking the oxide islands, a problem which otherwise occurs when the heat barrier is a continuous oxide layer. Thin film resistors are supported on the oxide islands and front conductors are connected to back conductors by vias. The flexible substrate can be folded to form monolithic assemblies or the flexible substrate can be bent around a pen body. Discrete heat-spread layers of titanium are provided between the oxide islands and a chromium adhesion layer on the substrate.

The present invention is a method of treating foam for improving wettability. The method includes treating foam with reactive species which interact to produce reaction products. The reaction products are then removed from foam. Finally, after removing reaction products the foam is treated with reactive species which interact to produce additional reaction products.

A valve device is incorporated within a printhead of an ink-jet pen for regulation of ink flow and pressure within the printhead. The valve device includes a valve member comprising a resiliently deformable flap positioned in an ink channel, adjacent a firing chamber. A thermal inkjet printhead includes unpassivated heater resistors whose resistive material is doped, preferably with oxygen, nitrogen or an equivalent dopant, for increasing the resistance of the material. By increasing the resistance of the resistive material through doping, the drive currents for generating heat within the resistors need not be changed from levels which inkjet printers are presently designed to work with. The printhead of the invention can thus be used in place of a standard printhead without modification to the printer.

In one of the preferred embodiments, an inkjet printhead includes a nozzle member formed of a polymer material that has been laser-ablated to form inkjet orifices, ink channels, and vaporization chambers in the unitary nozzle member. The nozzle member is then mounted to a substrate containing heating elements associated with each orifice. In a preferred method, the orifices, ink channels, and vaporization chambers are formed using an Excimer laser.

A system for delivering ink to print heads in thermal ink jet printers includes a liquid compartment with a gas space thereabove at sub-atmospheric pressure, a hydrophobic membrane mounted between the liquid compartment and the surrounding environment for allowing ambient gases to bubble into the liquid while preventing liquid from flowing in the opposite direction through the membrane, at least one chamber that provides a reservoir of ink with a gas space thereabove at sub-atmospheric pressure, and a manifold connecting the gas space in the liquid compartment with the gas space in the ink chamber. Thermal ink jet print heads are mounted in ink-flow communication with the ink chamber and are adapted for ejecting ink onto sheets to be printed. In operation, ink flows into the thermal ink jet print heads at a flow rate which is regulated by a generally constant back pressure. This novel pen body construction enables the hydrophobic membrane to be completely isolated from the ink in the multiple ink reservoirs of the pen, with the advantage that ingredients and additives within the ink do not degrade the surface properties of the hydrophobic membrane material.

A substrate for the print head of an ink jet printer includes a plastic base, a metallization layer overlying the plastic base, and a dielectric structure overlying the metallization layer. A thin film resistor is deposited over the substrate, as required. Preferred materials include polyimide plastic for the base, chromium for the metallization layer, and a bilayer construction of silicon dioxide overlying titanium for the dielectric structure.
