A dispenser () for a volatilizable material has a first member () that is substantially cup-shaped with a given diameter (X) and with a given depth (Z) and having a first peripheral flange () having a first diameter (D). A second member () has a second peripheral flange () with a second diameter (D) greater than the given diameter (X). The first peripheral flange () and the second peripheral flange () are in intimate contact thereby defining a volatilizable material chamber () between the bottom () of the second member () and the bottom () of the first cup-shaped member (). A volatilizable material () such as liquid mercury is placed in the chamber; and a hermetic seal () is formed between the first and second flanges. When installed in a fluorescent lamp the volatilizable material is released by heating the dispenser with RF current. The material is released when the vapor pressure within the dispenser reaches about 20 atmospheres. For mercury, this pressure is achieved when the dispenser reaches about 600&#xb0; C.

In a telephone system wherein a number of distant terminals are each connected to a remote terminal and in which a number of remote terminals are each connected to a central office, a distant terminal includes a drop testing circuit for making sequential measurements on a plurality of customer telephones. The drop test circuit is included in a measurement system for providing condition responsive signals describing parameters of the telephone system, The drop test circuit includes circuitry such as scaling resistors, voltage sources, switching elements, and a multiplexed analog to digital voltage-sensing converter for providing digital data for transmission to the remote terminal or other more central location. The remote terminal comprises a computer based analyzer for interpreting, processing, and storing the data transmitted to it. The analyzer, servicing hundreds or thousands of telephones, may accumulate historical data and sophisticated measurements as well as pass-fail data indicating whether the drops to each customer meet conventional standards. The analyzer is further capable of providing all results to conventional drop test survey equipment or to service personnel in a variety of formats.

A video distribution system with an optical-to-radio frequency conversion device that can be configured to reduce the amount of insertion loss introduced into the system and the number of hardware connections needed for the system's operation. A jumper module replaces protection fuses within the conversion device and isolates two of the device's output signal ports from the internal low frequency supply used to operated the device. The isolation permits the use of a single power inserter apparatus that provides the electrical power to downstream signal driving devices receiving the converted signal from the device.

A microwave vehicle lamp having reflector housing, lens, light source, applicator card, and brace is disclosed. The light source and microwave power applicators are supported by a applicator card, which includes electrical couplings. The card is then adjustablly positioned along one portion in a slot formed in the reflector housing. An adjustable brace may be attached between the reflector housing and the applicator card to finally adjust the light source position for a preferred optical positioning. The brace is then soldered in place to rigidly hold the applicator card in place, yielding a microwave powered vehicle headlamp with a properly and securely positioned light source.

A superconducting coil assembly. The assembly includes an insulating substrate, a plurality of insulating layers disposed in a stacked assembly on the substract, and a superconducting spiral pattern between the substrate and the adjacent insulating layer and between each adjacent pair of insulating layers. Superconducting connecting portions connect the spiral patterns to form a continuous thick film superconducting coil of right hand or left hand orientation. The spiral patterns and connecting portions are thick films of a high temperature ceramic superconducting material. A superconducting connecting link may interconnect the ends of the continuous coil to form a closed loop. The insulating layers and spiral patterns may be deposited successively over an insulating substrate. Alternatively, the insulating layers may be annular disks with vias therethrough for connecting the spiral patterns. Preferably, the cross-sectional area of each coil portion varies inversely with its radius to effect a constant critical current capacity throughout each coil portion. A method for producing the coil assembly is also disclosed.

Formed-to-shape superconducting coil

A true n-by-n optical crosspoint matrix switch has n optical fiber outputs each carrying the same light that entered the switch at one of n fiber inputs, maintaining the full optical spectral characteristics although the polarization states may be modified. A mounting plate on a patch panel has an n-by-n array of connection adapters in n rows and no columns. An electromechanical positioning mechanism is utilized to position n input fibers along one row to any of n adapter positions each in a different column on a first side of said plate, and n output fibers along one column to any one of n adapter positions, each in a different row on a second side of said plate. Any input fiber can be connected to any output fiber and none of the adapters are shared by more than one input or one output connector. The electromechanical positioning mechanism includes a pair of cam driven walking legs supporting a fiber carrier one for each column on the first side of said plate and one for each row on the second side of said patch plate. The fiber carriers step linearly from one adapter position to the next, raising and lowering the fiber to break or make connections.

Apparatus for cooling a semiconductor device by expansion cooling and/or evaporative cooling with a nontoxic gas includes a heat exchanger in thermal contact with the device to be cooled. A stream of expanding gas is released from a pressurized gas or liquid source through an expansion valve and is directed toward a heat exchange surface of the heat exchanger. The heat exchange surface includes fins which extend outwardly from the expansion valve and define grooves that direct the expanding gas over the heat exchange surface. The fins and grooves can be radial, spiral or branching for efficient thermal transfer. The grooves increase in cross-sectional area with radial distance from the expansion valve to accommodate the expanding gas volume. When a liquid is utilized, the liquid evaporates upon passing through the expansion valve, thereby providing both evaporative cooling and expansion cooling.

A circuit breaker having a contact opening and closing mechanism including a contact actuator member which is moved between a first position and a second position to close and open the contacts. The movable contact is mounted on one end of an elongated contact carrier which is connected in its central region by means of a pin and slot combination (providing a free floating coupling arrangement) to the contact actuator member. A compression spring is positioned between the contact actuator member and a portion of the contact carrier between the pin and slot combination and the other end of the contact carrier. When the contact actuator member is in the first position, the compression spring produces a torque in one direction about the other end of the contact carrier forcing the contacts closed. When the contact actuator member moves from the first position toward the second, the pin and slot combination become the pivot point and the direction of the torque produced by the compression spring is reversed thus enhancing the contact opening process.

Circuit breaker

A circuit breaker having an overload mechanism including a support member mounted in the circuit breaker housing. One end of an elongated bimetallic element is fixed to one end of the support member. An armature element is mounted at one end to the one end of the bimetallic element and its other end has a latching surface engaging a trip arm to hold it in a set position. The support member has a reference surface adjacent to its other end and the trip arm is biased against it. An overload current causes the other end of the bimetallic element to deflect, moving the other end of the armature element with it and disengaging its latching surface from the trip arm. The released trip arm pivots to a tripped position causing the breaker contacts to open. The dimensional relationships between the reference surface and the latching surface determine the tripping characteristics of the circuit breaker.

A circuit breaker having a contact opening and closing mechanism including a contact actuator member which is moved between a first position and a second position to close and open the contacts. The movable contact is mounted on one end of a contact carrier which is pivotally mounted at its central region to the contact actuator member. A leaf spring is positioned between the other end of the contact carrier and the circuit breaker case. When the contact actuator member is in the first position, the leaf spring produces a torque on the contact carrier in one direction about the pivot forcing the contacts closed. When the contact actuator member moves from the first position toward the second, the leaf spring becomes ineffective and a torsion spring which engages the contact carrier and the contact actuator arm produces a torque pivoting the contact carrier in the opposite direction thus enhancing the contact opening process.

Electrical circuit breaker

A circuit breaker having an overload mechanism including an elongated bimetallic element having one end pivotally mounted in the circuit breaker housing and the other end pivotally positioned at one end of an armature element. The armature element has a latching surface engaging a trip arm to hold it in a set position. An overload current causes the bimetallic element to bend. Since the ends of the bimetallic element are constrained, its central portion moves causing the armature element to pivot disengaging its latching surface from the trip arm. The released trip arm pivots to a tripped position causing the breaker contacts to be opened.

Circuit breakers

A non-tracking elongated evacuated tube solar energy collector employing compound parabolic reflectors. An energy absorber is positioned at the focal points of the parabolas and is supported by one or more support members along its length. Each support member is a length of resilient wire in the form of a coil encircling the energy absorber with arms extending from each side of the coil. Each arm bears against the inner walls of the evacuated tube at two spaced-apart contact regions.
