An adaptive engine speed control system includes an idle condition module that determines whether the engine is idling and determines whether an actual engine speed is different than a desired engine speed. The desired engine speed corresponds to a commanded engine speed. A torque reserve determination module adjusts at least one of a torque reserve and the desired engine speed based on the determination of whether the engine is idling and the determination that the actual engine speed differs from the desired engine speed. The torque reserve corresponds to a quantity of torque reserved to respond to an anticipated future load on the engine.

Adaptive engine speed control to prevent engine from roll and stall

An engine control system comprises a driver input module, a cylinder actuation module, and an active fuel management (AFM) module. The driver input module generates a fuel saver mode (FSM) signal having a first state based upon a driver input. The cylinder actuation module selectively disables at least one of a plurality of cylinders of an engine based upon a deactivation signal having a first state. The AFM module generates the deactivation signal based on at least one engine parameter and at least one threshold. The at least one threshold is modified when the FSM signal has the first state.

Engine control system for increased vehicle fuel economy

An engine control system includes a desired manifold absolute pressure (MAP) module, a MAP to torque module, a threshold determination module, and a fuel economy (FE) mode module. The desired MAP module determines a desired MAP for operation of an engine in one of a cylinder deactivation mode and a low-lift mode based on a difference between a desired vacuum and an air pressure upstream of a throttle valve. The MAP to torque module determines a desired torque output of the engine for operation in the one of the cylinder deactivation mode and the low-lift mode based on the desired MAP. The threshold determination module determines an entry torque based on the desired torque output. The FE mode module selectively triggers operation in the one of the cylinder deactivation mode and the low-lift mode based on a comparison of the entry torque and a torque request.

A method of transitioning an engine to a cylinder deactivation mode may include determining a ratio of time that the engine is operating in the cylinder deactivation mode for an engine operating condition relative to a total time of engine operation in the operating condition, determining a number of transitions from a full cylinder mode to the cylinder deactivation mode during the operating condition, determining a transition modifier based on the ratio and number, and modifying a transition criterion based on the transition modifier.

An engine control system for controlling the engine to transition between an activated mode where all cylinders are active and a deactivated mode where less than all cylinders are active is provided. The system includes: a noise vibration and harshness (NVH) limit module that determines a noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) torque limit based on the engine speed and the vehicle speed; and a mode transition module that enables the engine to transition between the deactivated mode and the activated mode while limiting noise, vibration, and harshness based on the NVH torque limit and a requested torque.

A throttle control system for a vehicle includes a driver input that generates a control signal and a control module that generates a throttle control signal based on the control signal. The control module determines whether the throttle control signal is within one of a first and a second region, determines a compensation factor from a first look-up table when the throttle control signal is within the first region and determines the compensation factor from a second look-up table when the throttle control signal is within the second region. The control module calculates a compensated throttle control signal based on the compensation factor.

An engine control system for monitoring torque increase during cylinder deactivation for a displacement on demand (DOD) engine includes a throttle and a controller. The controller adjusts a preload of the throttle prior to a cylinder deactivation event and determines whether a DOD fault is present during the cylinder deactivation event. The controller one of operates the engine without the preload in the deactivated mode and switches the engine back to the activated mode if the fault is present for a predetermined time. The controller cancels the preload if the DOD fault is present and resets the preload if the predetermined period has not expired. The DOD fault includes one of an engine speed fault, a transmission gear fault and a fueled cylinder fault.

An engine control system and method monitors torque increase during cylinder deactivation for a displacement on demand engine. A timer is started at cylinder deactivation. A controller adjusts throttle position and determines whether cylinder deactivation completes within a predetermined time. The controller adjusts throttle position based on the status of an enable condition. The controller determines if engine speed and vehicle acceleration are each within a threshold. The controller operates the throttle in a preload operating mode if the enable condition is met and operates the throttle in a normal operating mode if the enable condition is not met.

An engine toque estimator according to the invention includes a vehicle data bus that provides a plurality of engine operating inputs including at least one of engine RPM, spark and a dilution estimate. A steady state torque estimator communicates with the vehicle data bus and generates a steady state engine torque signal. A measurement model communicates with the vehicle data bus and compensates for errors associated with engine-to-engine variation. A dynamic torque estimator communicates with at least one of the vehicle data bus, the measurement model, and the steady state torque estimator and generates an actual torque signal.
