A jaw assembly () that receives a tubular bag material () that is transversely sealed and transversely cut by the jaw assembly () to form bagsof snack food. The tubular bag material () is delivered in a downward direction (). The jaw assembly () includes sealing jaws (), with the jaws () operating in pairs to transversely seal the tubular bag material (). Each of the jaws () has an end surface () that heats and engages the tubular bag material (), to form the seal therein. Each surface () is spaced from its respective rotational axis by a radius (). Most preferably the radius () is less than 85 mm, but greater than 65 mm.

Packaging machine

A former assembly () including a base () to which there is attached a frame () that supports a sleeve (). The sleeve () encloses a generally upwardly extending passage () to which product is delivered in batches from a weighing machine. Fixed to the internal surface () of the former shoulder () are heaters () that heat the external surface () over which the film bag material passes to be heated thereby.

Former shoulder

A packaging assembly () including a weighing machine () that is located above a former (). Located below the former () is a packaging machine (), with strip bag material () being pulled through the assembly by a film drive assembly () that pulls the bag material past the former () to form tubular bag material () that is delivered to the packaging machine () together with product to form bags of the product.

A drive assembly () to move tubular bag material past a former and deliver a tubular bag material to a packaging machine. The drive assembly () includes a pair of drive belts () that are parallel and driven in unison by means of a drive pulley () and either pulleys ().

Film drive assembly

A device to inspect a longitudinal heat seal in tubular bag material. The seal is formed by a heated sealing bar (). Downstream of the bar () is a heat sensing camera () that sends a signal to a central processing unit (). The unit () will then identify any faults in the seal.

Bag seal inspection device

A chute assembly () to deliver product to a former () of a packaging assembly. The chute assembly () includes a chute () that converges downwardly. Located adjacent the chute () is a metal detector () having a transmitting and receiving coils () of different diameters. The receiving coils () being adapted to provide a signal when metal is detected.

Packaging machine former

A metal detector () has a metallic enclosure () with entrance and exit apertures () whose cross-sectional areas differ from each other. Inside the enclosure is a coil system with a transmitter coil () and first and second receiver coils (). The apertures and the coil system enclose a detection zone () around a travel path on which objects under inspection move. The asymmetric detection zone has a variable cross-section along the travel path and the coils differ in size from each other. The receiver coils are connected in series, but their windings are wired with the opposite sense of rotation relative to each other. Energizing the transmitter coil generates a primary electromagnetic field that induces a first voltage and a second voltage in the corresponding receiver coils. Despite the asymmetry, the respective voltages cancel each other when no metal is present in the object investigated.

Each trayis operated by a drive assemblythat horizontally reciprocates (oscillates) the associated trayto cause product to advance along the assembly. Adjacent traysmay be displaced so that there is a gap between adjacent trays through which product may be delivered.
