A head rotatable about an axis for machining and simultaneously polishing the peripheral surfaces of shafts or the like, comprises a support plate provided with a central opening through which a shaft to be machined and polishing may extend. A plurality of tool supports are mounted in a star-like manner on the support plate adjustable in radial direction toward a shaft extending through the central opening. The tool supports alternatingly carry at inner ends knives or polishing rolls. A central adjustment device is provided for simultaneously adjusting of the tools carried by the tool supports through equal distances in radial direction toward the workpiece. The central adjustment is carried out by a plurality of angular drives, each including a bevel gear for each tool support and at least one gear ring with which the bevel gears mesh. It is also possible to adjust all tool supports carrying the knives independent from all tool supports carrying the polishing rolls in which case two gear rings are provided which are turnably mounted on the support plate concentric with the axis of the head.

Elongated pipes are internally peeled by positioning a machining head within the pipe while providing relative rotational and longitudinal movement between the pipe and machining head. An external clamping force is applied to the pipe generally radially of its longitudinal axis and in substantial alignment with the machining head for minimizing vibration of the pipe during the machining operation.

A cutting tool for machining the outer surfaces of elongated workpieces such as wire, rod or pipe has main and secondary cutting edges intersecting one another at an included obtuse angle and the secondary cutting edge is substantially longer than the main cutting edge.

Machine for simultaneous reduction and straightening of metallic tubes or rods has a reducing die which is mounted in the frame downstream of a guide for workpieces and upstream of a ring-shaped straightening tool whose axis orbits about the axis of the opening in the die. The outlet end of the internal surface surrounding the opening in the die tapers counter to the direction of lengthwise movement of workpieces through the die. The guide insures that the workpieces cannot be flexed upstream of the throat portion of the internal surface of the die, and a second guide can be provided downstream of the straightening tool to confine the flexing of the workpieces to the region between the throat portion of the internal surface of the die and the second guide. The tool is mounted in a spherical bearing which is installed in the eccentric bore of a sleeve driven by a pulley to rotate about the axis of the die whereby the tool orbits the axis of its passage about the axis of the opening in the die.

Combined drawing and straightening machine for metallic tubes or rods

A metal peeling machine for workpieces such as rods and tubes having a clamping carriage movably mounted on the machine bed. The carriage also receives a clamping arrangement which not only engages the workpiece but also is adapted to engage a workpiece guide sleeve, if and when the guide sleeve has to be moved for service purposes. The guide sleeve is provided with clamping means which are constructed to co-act with the aforementioned clamping arrangement on the carriage.

A workpiece feed channel interposed between a metal peeling machine and straightener for elongated, rotating or non-rotating, metal workpieces. The channel includes a plurality of opposed pairs of driven profiled elements having workpiece receiving openings therebetween of a cross-sectional size approximately 1.5 to 10 times larger than the cross-sectional size of the workpieces carried therein. The workpieces are carried by and fed forwardly by the gravitational frictional engagement with the profiled elements. In one embodiment, the upper profile elements are raised to permit the release of the workpiece down inclined surfaces, rather than for the workpiece to continue on to the straightening machine.
