The present invention relates to disperse azo dyes based on a phthalimido-substituted aniline coupling component and an aromatic-carbocyclic or an aromatic-heterocyclic diazo component, to a process for the preparation of such dyes and to their use in the dyeing or printing of semi-synthetic and, especially, synthetic hydrophobic fiber materials, more especially textile materials.

Azo dyes

The present invention relates to dye mixtures comprising (A) from 20 to 80% by weight of one or more compounds of formula (1) wherein Ris C-Calkyl, or C-Calkyl interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms or &#x2014;COO-groups and R, R, Rand R, each independently of the others, is hydrogen, C-Calkyl, chlorine, bromine, hydroxy or amino and(B) from 20 to 80% by weight of at least one further yellow disperse dye the sum of components (A)+(B) being 100% by weight, and to the use of those dye mixtures in the dyeing or printing of semi-synthetic or synthetic hydrophobic fiber materials.

Disperse dyes of formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is nitro or cyano, R.sub.2 is halogen, R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each independently of the other methyl or ethyl and R.sub.6 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, with the proviso that R.sub.6 is not hydrogen if R.sub.1 is cyano, R.sub.2 is halogen and R.sub.3 is methyl or isopropyl or if R.sub.1 is nitro, R.sub.2 is halogen and R.sub.3 is methyl. These dyes are suitable in particular for dyeing and printing polyester textile materials.

Disperse dyes

Disperse dyes of formula ##STR1## wherein R is nitro or cyano, R.sub.1 is halogen, R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy, halogen, cyano or phenyl, R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, R.sub.4 is methyl or ethyl, R.sub.5 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and R6 is methyl or ethyl, with the proviso that R.sub.5 is not hydrogen if R is nitro, R.sub.1 is halogen and R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl. These dyes are particularly suitable for dyeing and printing textile materials consisting of polyester fibres.

A dye mixture, which comprises as component (A) a dye of formula as component (B) a dye of formula ##STR1## and/or as component (C) a dye of formula ##STR2## wherein D, X and Y are as defined in the specification. These dyes are particularly suitable for dyeing polyester fiber textile material.

An improved process for the preparation of 2,3-dibromopropionyl chloride, which comprises brominating acrylic acid, adding iron powder or an iron salt to the resultant melt, chlorinating the dibromopropionic acid obtained, and removing the volatile components. The 2,3-dibromopropionyl chloride is obtained in high yield and purity and is an intermediate for synthesising in particular reactive dyes.
