The present invention provides biaxially oriented multilayer fluoropolymer films. They are produced by coextruding or laminating films having at least one layer of a fluoropolymer, at least one layer of a thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer and an intermediate adhesive layer which is preferably a polyolefin having at least one functional moiety of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. With this structure the thermoplastic layer allows the fluoropolymer layer to be biaxially stretched many times its original length. A high orientation ratio for the fluoropolymer film increases the mechanical strength, toughness, and water vapor barrier properties of the film while using a thinner gauge fluoropolymer film. Coextrusion processing can be done at higher temperatures, i.e. in the range of from at about 280.degree. C. to about 400.degree. C. These temperatures allow films to be produced in the absence of polymer degradation and film melt fracture.

Biaxial orientation of fluoropolymer films

Multilayered films produced by coextruding or laminating films comprised of at least one layer of polymethylpentene, at least one layer of a polyamide and an intermediate polymeric adhesive layer. The polyamide layer allows the polymethylpentene layer to be stretched up to 6 times its original length. Such a high orientation ratio for the mulitlayered film increases the mechanical strength and toughness properties of the film. The mulitlayered films are suitable for use as release films for high temperature composite applications such as printed circuit boards.

High temperature release films

A polymeric film having superior oxygen barrier properties comprising at least five layers with at least one exterior layer comprised of polyester, one exterior layer selected from the group consisting of a polyester, an aliphatic polyamide, and an aliphatic/aromatic polyamide, an interior layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer and an aliphatic/aromatic polyamide, and a modified polyolefin adhesive layer between each exterior layer and the interior layer.

Retortable, high oxygen barrier polymeric films

A polymeric film having superior oxygen barrier properties comprising at least five layers with two exterior layers independently selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic polyamide and an aliphatic/aromatic polyamide, an interior layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend of poly(m-xylylene adipamide) and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, and a modified polyolefin adhesive layer between each exterior layer and the interior layer.

A polymeric film having superior oxygen barrier properties comprising at least three layers, two layers formed of an aliphatic polyamide such as poly(caprolactam) sandwiching a layer formed of an aliphatic/aromatic polyamide such as poly(m-xylylene adipamide) or a blend of an aliphatic/aromatic polyamide such as poly(m-xylylene adipamide) with an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer.

Retortable polymeric films

The present invention is a film laminate comprising a polyamide layer, preferably polyepsiloncaprolactam, and a layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. The polyamide layer and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer layer are preferably adjacent layers. The laminate is expanded to an area of less than 4 times the original area. Preferably, the laminate is drawn to a draw ratio of from 1.5:1 to 4:1 in at least one direction. Preferred laminates have outer layers of polyepsiloncaprolactam and at least one inner layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer adjacent to at least one layer of polyepsiloncaprolactam. Preferably, the laminate is a multilayer coextrusion.

Oriented film laminates of polyamides and ethylene vinyl alcohol

Disclosed is a polyamide film of low crystallinity suitable for use in the manufacture of sheet molding compound (SMC). The sheet is produced from a blend comprising a polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyepsiloncaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide or mixtures thereof, and about 10 to 30 wt. %, based on the total weight of said blend, of a polyolefin compound, or copolymer thereof, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. The film has a tear strength of at least about 400 grams in the longitudinal direction as measured by ASTM D-1004-66.

Process to produce sheet molding compound using a polyamide release film

A composition of matter comprising a polyamide, preferably polyepsiloncaprolactam, and from 1 to 65 percent of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. The composition is useful for making moldings, films, and fibers.
