A system and method for providing a tunable antenna system within a mobile device that enables the mobile device to receive broadcast communication signals. The antenna system includes a tunable antenna and a tuning module that is operable to selectively adjust the resonant frequency of the tunable antenna, such that the antenna may efficiently receive a plurality of discrete narrow band signals across a broad frequency spectrum. The tuning module may also include a lookup table for use by the tuning module to selectively adjust the resonant frequency of the antenna. Further, the antenna system may include a temperature compensation module that is operable to compensate for any temperature sensitive components in the tunable antenna system.

Tunable antennas for mobile handsets

A multi-frequency, noise optimized active antenna consisting of one or several actively tuned antennas optimized over incremental bandwidths and capable of tuning over a large total bandwidth. One or multiple impedance transformers are connected to the antennas at an optimal location, with the transformers acting to reduce the impedance for optimal coupling to a transceiver/receiver. Active components can be incorporated into the antenna structures to provide yet additional extension of the bandwidth along with increased optimization of antenna performance over the frequency range of the antenna. The radiating elements can be co-located with a ferrite material and/or active components coupled to the element to tune across a wide frequency range.

Multi-frequency, noise optimized active antenna

Generally, an antenna module includes a plurality of monopole antenna elements (e.g., 3 to 4 antenna elements) that can be coupled together by one or more switches to provide for a tunable, wideband antenna module. For example, the switches may change the overall length of the antenna such that the frequency range of the antenna is changed. The frequency response may also be controlled by a low voltage micro sized varicap, or a varactor diode, and instantiated as a tuned, resonant matching filter network residing with the antenna module. Additionally, switches may be used to 'switch in' and 'switch out' capacitive elements to adjust the bandwidth of the antenna. The resonant matching filter network may then be used for fine tuning the frequency of that bandwidth.

Wideband antenna system

An active tuned loop-coupled antenna capable of optimizing performance over incremental bandwidths and capable of tuning over a large total bandwidth to be used in wireless communications. The active loop is capable of serving as the radiating element or a radiating element can be coupled to this active loop. Multiple active tuned loops can be coupled together to extend the total bandwidth of the antenna. Active components can be incorporated into the antenna structure to provide yet additional extension of the bandwidth along with increased optimization of antenna performance over the frequency range of the antenna.

Active tuned loop-coupled antenna

An arrangement for electrically decoupling IC-circuits by means of decoupling capacitors. A particularly simple and effective electical decoupling of such circuits is achieved by mounting, e.g. gluing, a metal foil (2) on the circuit. The earth connection (3) of the circuit is connected to the edge of the foil through a short conductor and each of the signal output (4) and supply conductor (5) is connected directly to the foil edge through a respective soldered chip capacitor (7, 8).
