The invention relates to an exhaust system () for an internal combustion engine, having an exhaust gas path which, at least in sections, has two parallel exhaust ducts (), specifically a main duct () and a secondary duct (), wherein a HC adsorber () for the reversible adsorption of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) is provided in the secondary duct (); having a setting means () for selectively conducting an exhaust gas flow into the main duct () and/or into the secondary duct (), and having a main catalytic converter () arranged downstream of the parallel exhaust ducts (). It is intended that a catalytic exhaust gas converter () for converting at least one exhaust gas component is provided in the main duct () of the parallel exhaust ducts ().

The invention relates to an exhaust gas system () for an internal combustion engine (), having an exhaust gas path which includes at least in sections two parallel exhaust gas lines (), namely a main line () and an auxiliary line (), an adsorber () for reversible sorption of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) and/or nitrogen oxides (NO) being situated in the auxiliary line (); having an adjusting means () for selectively guiding an exhaust gas flow into the main line () and/or into the auxiliary line () and having a main catalytic converter () situated downstream from the parallel exhaust gas lines (). An exhaust gas flow-conducting, gas-permeable element () is provided upstream from the adsorber (), which separates the auxiliary line () from the remaining exhaust gas flow-conducting areas. In addition, the adsorber () may also be equipped with a particle filtering function and/or a catalytic function.

In a method for the after-treating of an exhaust gas from a preferably direct-injection and/or spark-ignition internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas is fed through a catalytic converter system connected downstream of the internal combustion engine. The system has at least one catalyst with a noble metal depletion having at least the elements palladium and rhodium which are present in a weight ratio of &#x3e;5:1, 6:1, 7:1, 8:1, 9:1, 10:1, 11:1, or 12:1. In the new European driving cycle, the catalyst exceeds a temperature Tof 300&#xb0; C., 450&#xb0; C., 550&#xb0; C., 600&#xb0; C. within a time interval of 30 s, preferably 20 s, especially preferably 10 s after starting the engine, and/or the cumulative untreated emissions of hydrocarbons not exceeding 0.05 g/km and/or of nitrogen oxides not exceeding 0.04 g/km within a time interval of 10 s, preferably 20 s, especially preferably 30 s after starting the engine, and/or the engine achieving at least the emissions limit values of EU standard 4, preferably EU standard 5.

Exhaust gas after-treatment having reduced rhodium depletion

A method and an arrangement are provided for reducing warm-up emissions in the exhaust system of a direct-injection internal-combustion engine. The method includes the steps of adjusting a lean air/fuel mixture for the engine-related combustion; implementing a late injection into the exhaust gas during the exhaust cycle of the internal-combustion engine, so that the exhaust gas contains an essentially stoichiometric air/fuel mixture; and igniting the stoichiometric air/fuel mixture contained in the exhaust gas in the proximity of a catalyst device for heating up the catalyst device.

Process and apparatus for reducing warm-up emissions of a direct injection internal combustion engine

A combination of an adsorbent with a catalyst for internal combustion engines. The adsorbent-catalyst combination is built up in two or more alternating layers of zones, which are coated to be adsorbing, and zones, which are coated to have catalytic activity, and are connected in series in relation to the flow of exhaust gas. The zones having adsorbing activity are to be designed thermodynamically so that they have a lesser heat transfer than the zones having catalytic activity, so that the zones having catalytic activity have a higher support temperature than the upstream zones having adsorbing activity.
