Robotic surgical systems and methods of operating robotic surgical systems are included. The methods include directing light at an optical element configured to be detected by an image capture device of the robotic surgical system, the optical element configured to reflect light having a wavelength within a predetermined range, detecting, using an image capture device capturing images of the optical element, an absence or a presence of the reflected light from the optical element, and providing a notification, in response to the detection by the image capture device of the absence of the reflected light from the optical element.

Systems and methods for detection of objects within a field of view of an image capture device

A method of directing energy to tissue includes the initial steps of determining target tissue location and/or target tissue margins, positioning an ablation device for delivery of energy to target tissue, and positioning one or more heat-sensitive optical probes into a tissue region to be monitored. Each heat-sensitive optical probe is adapted to utilize spectral properties of light to access one or more optical fiber portions of the heat-sensitive optical probe in response to heat. The method also includes the steps of applying energy to the ablation device, continuing ablation while size and/or position of ablated zone which received heat above a threshold value is displayed on a monitor using one or more electrical signals generated by the one or more heat-sensitive optical probes, and determining whether the ablated zone displayed on the monitor is larger than the target tissue margins.

A method of directing energy to tissue includes the initial steps of determining target tissue location and/or target tissue margins, positioning an ablation device for delivery of energy to target tissue, and introducing a material having a shape into a tissue region to be monitored. The material is adapted to change echogenic properties in response to heat. The method also includes the steps of applying energy to the ablation device, monitoring the material on a monitor, determining an echogenic response of the material, and terminating ablation if it is determined that the echogenic response of the material is outside a predetermined target tissue threshold.

Device and method for heat-sensitive agent application

A method for hernia mesh placement during in-situ surgical applications. The method includes the step of positioning a mesh having a center mark within an abdominal cavity near a site of repair. A light assembly projecting a light beam through a free end is provided. Next, the free end of the light assembly is inserted through a central location of the site of repair. Finally, the center mark of the mesh is aligned with the light beam of the light assembly to position the mesh at the central location of the site of repair.

A method is provided. The method includes placing a magnetic field viewing film over a region of tissue; inserting at least one of a medical device or a medical instrument comprising at least one magnetic element into the region of the tissue; and determining a location of at least one of the medical device or the medical instrument based on a visualization by the magnetic field viewing film of a magnetic field produced by the at least one magnetic element.

A corresponding method of measuring and correcting an image from an optical metrology and image correction device includes emitting a beam of light from a point size light source, causing the beam of light to be received by a translucent mask in a first position substantially orthogonal to the mask and in a second position in a direction offset with respect to the translucent mask.

A surgical camera assembly includes a camera member and a receptacle member. The camera member includes a camera head and a shaft. The shaft includes at least one electrical contact positioned towards a free end thereof. The at least one electrical contact is electrically coupled to the camera head. The receptacle member is configured to releasably receive the free end of the shaft and includes at least one electrical contact that is configured to electrically couple to the at least one electrical contact of the shaft to establish electrical communication between the camera head and the receptacle member when the free end of the shaft is received within the receptacle member.

A system and method is presented for performing optical measurements, including a light source configured to emit a light beam, a first pattern generator defining a first longitudinal axis and configured to project a first generated pattern, and a second pattern generator defining a second longitudinal axis and configured to project a second generated pattern. The first and second generated patterns have different angular divergency. The first pattern generator is a diffractive circle pattern generator, whereas the second pattern generator is a diffractive cross pattern generator. Adjustment of the first and second generated patterns with respect to each other cause the system to serve as an optical ruler for performing the optical measurements when the first and second generate patterns overlap or coincide with each other at certain points.

Systems and methods for optical measurement for in-situ surgical applications

A first metrology method includes the steps of projecting a first image and a second image, aligning the first image and the second image to form an aligned image of a known size, and determining a dimension of a target object by comparing the aligned image to the target object. A second metrology method includes the steps of projecting a first image and a second image, aligning the first image and the second image to form an aligned image of a known size by synchronously adjusting a zoom factor for projecting the first image and an angle for projecting the second image, and determining a dimension of a target object by comparing the aligned image to the target object.

Methods utilizing triangulation in metrology systems for in-situ surgical applications

A metrology system includes a collinear array of uniformly spaced light elements for propagating parallel light beams. The parallel light beams assist in producing a light pattern on a target site. A method of measuring a dimension of a target site includes the steps of projecting uniformly spaced parallel light beams to form a light pattern having uniformly spaced elements on the target site, aligning the light pattern such that a maximum number of the uniformly spaced elements is positioned along the dimension; and counting the maximum number of the uniformly spaced elements positioned along the dimension.

Collimated beam metrology systems for in-situ surgical applications

Devices, systems and methods for using those devices and systems are disclosed to facilitate mapping and navigation during a minimally invasive surgical procedure. These devices, systems and methods include implantable magnetic devices and sensing devices that facilitate locating the implantable magnetic devices such that a surgeon can accurately locate and place devices at particular points of interest during a medical procedure.
