A method of catalytically preparing a fluid product from solid carbonaceous material is described. In the method, at least one of the following equilibria is established by one or more catalysts: a) CHOH&#x2550;CO+2H, b) CO+HO&#x2550;CO+H. In some versions, the solid carbonaceous material is woody biomass. Components of the fluid product can include one or a combination of C-Calcohols. In certain versions, the method can he practiced with substantially all of the carbon in the carbonaceous material being converted to the fluid product. Also, in some versions, the fluid product can be prepared with substantially no char formation. The fluid product of various versions can be used directly as fuel or as a reagent for preparing commodity chemicals without the need for separating the fluid product components.

Process for direct conversion of biomass to liquid fuels and chemicals

A method of catalytically preparing a fluid product from solid carbonaceous material is described. In the method, at least one of the following equilibria is established by one or more catalysts: a) CHOH=CO+2H, b) CO+HO=CO+H. In some versions, the solid carbonaceous material is woody biomass. Components of the fluid product can include one or a combination of C-Calcohols. In certain versions, the method can be practiced with substantially all of the carbon in the carbonaceous material being converted to the fluid product. Also, in some versions, the fluid product can be prepared with substantially no char formation. The fluid product of various versions can be used directly as fuel or as a reagent for preparing commodity chemicals without the need for separating the fluid product components.

Adsorbents and methods of use thereof are provided. One representative, among others, includes an adsorbent having an alkali metal promoted, mixed trivalent layered double hydroxide (LDH) composition. When the mixed trivalent layered double hydroxide (LDH) composition is heated to a temperature ranging from about 300&#xb0; C. to 450&#xb0; C., an the adsorbent having an adsorption capacity of at least 0.8 millimoles of COadsorbed per gram of adsorbent is formed.

Adsorbents, methods of preparation, and methods of use thereof

A substituted diaryl compound or a mixture of substituted diaryl compounds, such as dimethylbiaryl compounds are isomerized by treatment with a strong acid or mixtures of strong acids in the absence of any additional catalyst. The strong acid or mixture of acids has a Hammett acidity of less than about &minus;12.6. The isomerization reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, amount of acid, and amount of solvent can be adjusted to selectively produce desired isomers in high yields. One or more desired isomers may be produced in high yields by isomerization of substituted diaryl compounds and selectively removing one or more desired isomers from the resulting equilibrium mixture of isomers. The isomer mixture may be re-isomerized subsequent to selective removal of the desired isomer to produce additional amounts of desired isomer. The isomerization may be employed to substantially reduce the amount of at least one isomer substituted in the 2-position or to substantially increase the amount of at least one isomer substituted in at least the 3-position, the 4-position or the 4-position for the production of at least substantially linear or crystalline polymers.
