An apparatus comprises one or more electro-optical coupling modules. An electro-optical coupling module comprises a diode, a flexible optical coupling element, a reflective surface, and an optical fiber. The diode performs an electro-optical conversion on a signal. The flexible optical coupling element communicates the signal between the diode and the reflective surface. The reflective surface reflects the signal between the flexible optical coupling element and the optical fiber.

According to one embodiment, an apparatus for deflecting light beams comprises an input deflector and one or more Bragg gratings. The input deflector receives light beams from input channels, and deflects each light beam to an initial deflection angle. A Bragg grating deflects at least one light beam from the initial deflection angle to an increased deflection angle, where the increased deflection angle is at least closer to an output channel than the initial deflection angle.

Selectively enhancing angular beam deflection

An optical node for optical burst transport includes optical components operable to transmit and receive optical signals over an optical transmission medium. The optical components include a demultiplexer that is operable to receive a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical signal at an input port and to separate the WDM optical signal into two or more constituent wavelength signals, and a switching matrix that includes one or more electro-optic switches. Each electro-optic switch is operable to receive a wavelength signal and switch the signal to one of two outputs, and the outputs include an output port of the optical node and one or more drop output ports of the optical node.

Optical burst transport using an electro-optic switch

An optical beam splitter includes an input waveguide, two or more branching arms, two or more fan-out arms, and two or more output waveguides. The input waveguide receives an input light beam. The two or more branching arms are coupled to the input waveguide at a separation point and split the input light beam at the separation point into two or more light beams. Each fan-out arm is coupled to one of the branching arms and fans-out one of the two or more light beams to a predetermined output pitch. Each output waveguide is coupled to one of the fan-out arms and transmits one of the two or more light beams out of the optical beam splitter.

Optical beam splitter

A dynamic polarization controller ('DPC') that and method of dynamic polarization control useful in optical networks is disclosed. The DPC of the present invention has a polymeric optical waveguide formed on a substrate, such as a silicon wafer. An intermediate portion of the waveguide is suspended over a cavity, and a deflecting structure, such as an electrodes, is provided for controllably exerting a force on the suspended portion of the waveguide. Exerting a deflecting force on the suspended portion of the waveguide induces controllable birefringence in the waveguide core and, thereby allows dynamic control over the polarization properties of light passing through the DPC. An array of DPC's of the present invention can be formed on a single substrate and used in an optical network, for example a WDM system whereby plural light signals traveling through a single optical fiber are demultiplexed for processing. A plurality of the DPC may be formed in series on a substrate to increase the degree of polarization control. The DPC's of the present invention may be combined with differential group delay ('DGD') compensators to dynamically compensate for polarization mode dispersion (&#x201c;PMD&#x201d;) of optical signals. The DPC's of the present invention can operate in millisecond time-frames, thereby providing real time PMD compensation.

Method and apparatus for dynamic polarization control

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a passive element including one or more first waveguides and one or more second waveguides. The apparatus also includes an active element integrated into the passive element. The active element includes one or more third waveguides that actively guide light from the first waveguides to the second waveguides. The third waveguides include polarization-independent electro-optical (EO) thin film.

Polarization-independent electro-optical (EO) switching

Disclosed are optical modulators that provide high-speed modulation capability and compact size. In exemplary modulator embodiments, the branch waveguide cores are formed in different processing layers than the input waveguide core, and light is coupled from an input waveguide core to two branch waveguide cores along diagonal directions. The construction enables the input waveguide core to be made of low-loss material compared to the electro-optic material of the branch waveguide cores. Also disclosed are interconnect apparatuses that can be used in processing systems. Exemplary interconnect apparatuses provide various configurations of components that enable high-speed modulation and compact size. The exemplary interconnect apparatuses may use the exemplary optical modulators disclosed herein.

Optical interconnect apparatuses and electro-optic modulators for processing systems

A flexible optical connector suitable for use in an optical backplane for interconnecting optical circuit boards, and methods of making the optical connector, are disclosed. The flexible optical connector comprises a plurality of waveguides on two or more levels providing a plurality of light paths that allow light communication between optical circuit boards. The optical connector can be manufactured separately from the backplane and thereafter mounted on the backplane. The backplane of the present invention may also have a mounting structure for removably retaining and positioning optical circuit board and may, optionally, include electrical traces for providing electrical interconnections between the circuit boards.

Flexible optical waveguides for backplane optical interconnections

A method for creating an integrated linear polarizer is provided. An electro-optical component is fabricated and may include a bottom electrode, a bottom cladding layer, side cladding features, an electro-optic polymer layer, a top cladding layer, and a top electrode. After fabrication, the electro-optical component is poled to create or enhance polarization properties of the electro-optic polymer layer. The electro-optical component may be heated to at least a first threshold temperature. An electric field may then be applied to the electro-optical component. In the presence of the electric field, the electro-optical component may be cooled to at or below a second threshold temperature that is less than the first threshold temperature. Once the electro-optical component has cooled to the second threshold temperature, the electric field may be removed.

Integrated linear polarizer

An integrated electro-optic module may contain a continuous layer of electro-optic polymer through both a splitter portion and a modulator portion in order to facilitate high speed data transmission. The integrated electro-optic module may be fabricated by depositing a bottom cladding layer on a wafer, creating side cladding features, depositing the electro-optic polymer, and coating with a top cladding layer. The electro-optic polymer in both the splitter portion and modulator portion of the integrated electro-optic module may create inverted-ridge waveguide structures. The waveguide in the splitter portion may have a first ridge depth, and the waveguide in the modulator portion may have a second ridge depth, the first ridge depth greater than the second ridge depth.

Integrated electro-optic module for high speed data transmission

Methods and apparatuses for measuring the optical properties of solids, gels, and liquids are disclosed. The apparatuses may be constructed on miniature substrates using conventional semiconductor wafer and packaging processes. The substrates may be mass-produced on wafers, which are then diced to provide individual miniature substrates. High measurement precision, low-manufacturing costs, and other benefits are provided by the present inventions.

The present invention provides an optical interconnection platform, comprising a substrate, a plurality of integrated circuits attached to a surface of the substrate wherein each integrated circuit having an array of transmitters and an array of receivers, an optical integrated circuit module attached to an opposing surface of the substrate wherein the optical integrated circuit module comprising a highly transparent photosensitive material having an input microlens that collimate the light beams before entering the optical integrated circuit module and an output microlens that focuses the light beams into the array of receivers, and input and output Bragg diffractive gratings that are formed inside of the optical integrated circuit module.

Optical apparatuses providing optical interconnections among a plurality N of electronic components. One exemplary apparatus comprises a slab waveguide having a core layer that enables light beams to propagate in a plurality of directions, a plurality of N reception ports, and a plurality of N transmission ports, each reception port and each transmission port serving a respective electronic component, and each being optically coupled to the core layer of the slab waveguide. Each transmission port is configured to receive a plurality of light beams from its assigned electronic component and to transmit each received light beam onto the slab waveguide in a direction toward a reception port. Each reception port is configured to receive from the slab waveguide a plurality of light beams transmitted to it from at least two different transmission ports. Light beams within the slab waveguide are permitted to cross paths. Other exemplary embodiments are disclosed.

Optical apparatuses providing optical interconnections among a plurality of electronic components

The present invention provides an optical bridge for interconnecting optical networking components and methods of making optical bridges that include a waveguide that are compatible with semiconductor processing steps. The optical bridge of the present invention has less optical losses and is less affected by misalignment that prior art interconnections. The waveguide is formed of a curable optical material that spans optically active areas of two components. In one embodiment of the present invention, one optical component is an optical circuit board and the connected optical component is an electro-optical integrated circuit package containing light emitting or light receiving elements. The method provides a curable optical liquid to the components, bringing the components together to form a continuous optical liquid between the components, and curing the optical liquid.

Optical bridge for chip-to-board interconnection and methods of fabrication

A tunable micro-lens and micro-lens array for use in optical communications are disclosed. The micro-lens uses thermo optical material and a temperature controller to adjust the temperature and, hence, the index of refraction of the thermo optical material. In one embodiment, a single temperature controller is used to maintain an array of micro-lenses at a desired temperature. In an alternate embodiment, the individual lenses in an array are separately tunable. The invention may be used with either 2D or 3D lenses, and is well suited for use with existing planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology.
