A magnetic storage medium comprises a plurality of discrete magnetic elements and first and second adjoining servo sectors. Each of the servo sectors comprises first and second rows of the discrete magnetic elements extending in a track direction. The second row of the discrete magnetic elements are stacked relative to the discrete magnetic elements of the first row in a cross-track direction that is perpendicular to the track direction. The discrete magnetic elements of the first servo sector are staggered in the cross-track direction relative to the discrete magnetic elements of the second servo sector.

Bit patterned magnetic storage medium

A patterned recording media comprises a segment and a null pattern formed in the segment. The segment comprises first and second rows of discrete magnetic elements separated by a non-magnetic material, and a row of non-magnetic material positioned between the first and second rows. The null pattern comprises consecutive groups of the discrete magnetic elements in the first and second rows of the segment. Each group in the first row has a magnetic polarity that is opposite the magnetic polarity of adjoining groups in the first row. Each group in the second row has a magnetic polarity that is opposite the magnetic polarity of adjoining groups in the second row.

Null servo pattern for bit-patterned media

A method is disclosed for determining position information of a transducer. At least a first code and a second code are chosen. The first code has different characteristics than the second code. User data written to a first sub-track is encoded with the first code and user data written to a second sub-track is encoded with the second code. The first code read from the first sub-track is obtained and the second code read from the second sub-track is obtained. Position information of the transducer is extracted from the obtained characteristics of the first code and the obtained characteristics of the second code.

An apparatus and associated method of servo writing to a storage media is provided that writes servo information at a first orientation pattern from a first storage extent of the storage media to a medial portion of the storage media, and writes servo information at a second orientation pattern different than the first orientation pattern from an opposing storage extent of the storage media to approximately the medial portion, so that the patterns at approximately the medial portion are positionally interlaced.

Bi-directional servo track writing to minimize sidewall writing at high skew angles

A method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, comprises steps of providing a non-magnetic substrate for a magnetic medium, the substrate including at least one major surface having a contact start/stop (CSS) or landing zone and a data zone; and forming a pattern of recesses in the substrate surface in said CSS or landing zone by embossing utilizing a stamper having a surface including a negative image pattern of said pattern of recesses. Embodiments of the invention include magnetic media comprising a non-magnetic substrate including at least one major surface having a contact start/stop (CSS) or landing zone and a data zone, said substrate surface in said CSS or landing zone comprising an embossed pattern of recesses. In addition, the data zone of the substrate surface may include an embossed servo pattern formed simultaneously with the embossed pattern of recesses formed in the landing zone.

Recording media with mechanically patterned landing zone

An apparatus comprises a data storage medium having a plurality of servo sectors and a plurality of data sectors, wherein each of the servo sectors includes a phase locked loop field and a track identification field, a controller for controlling the position of a recording head with respect to the data storage medium, and a servo demodulator for recovering timing information from both the phase locked loop field and the track identification field, and for producing a timing estimate. The method performed by the apparatus is also included.

Utilizing track identification fields for timing recovery

A high bandwidth, large stroke spin-stand for testing components of a disc drive includes a coarse positioning stage and a rotary micropositioning stage. The spin-stand is capable of positioning a transducer head relative to the data storage disc based on one or both of: (1) an angular position of a rotary actuator arm in the rotary micropositioning stage; and (2) servo data read from the data storage disc. The angular position of the rotary actuator arm is detected by an encoder. In one embodiment, position adjustments are based on the detected angular position. In another embodiment, position adjustments are based on servo data read from the data storage disc, but are also conditional on angular position being consistent with the servo data. In yet another embodiment, both angular position and servo data from a track are linearized to generate PES adjustment parameters that are recorded on the data storage disc to redefine the track as more circular or to linearize the PES.

High bandwidth large stroke spin-stand

In a method for generating a confidence level of a position error signal (PES) component that is indicative of a quality of the PES component, a PES component is generated using position signal samples of a read back signal corresponding to a servo burst pattern. Next, a noise level corresponding to noise in the read back signal is extracted using the position signal samples. A confidence level is then generated based on the PES component and the noise level. A system for performing the method includes a transformation block, a position error signal (PES) component extractor, a noise extractor, and a confidence level generator. The transformation block is configured to receive position signal samples of a read back signal corresponding to a servo burst pattern taken at a sampling frequency. A transformed domain representation of the position signal samples is then generated by the transformation block based on the sampling frequency and the servo burst pattern. The PES component extractor is configured to extract a PES component of a PES based on the position signal samples. The noise extractor is configured to extract a noise level from the transformed domain representation. The confidence level generator is configured to generate a confidence level that is indicative of a quality of the PES component based on the PES component and the noise level.

A data storage device for retrieving data includes a controllably positionable head and a storage medium having servo information comprising a phase pattern having a first frequency and a PES pattern having a second frequency, the second frequency being different from the first frequency.

Bi-frequency servo pattern

The present invention relates to repeatable runout (RRO) compensation of servo control systems that can be used in disc drives or spin-stands. The RRO relates to eccentricity between servo tracks, which were written onto a disc prior to the installation of the disc into the disc drive or spin-stand, and an axis of rotation of the disc. The present invention compensates the servo control loop by canceling the RRO and controlling a head to follow virtual tracks which are eccentric to the data tracks defined by the servo tracks and concentric with the axis of rotation of the disc.

Virtual tracks for repeatable runout compensation

A method for thermally writing a magnetic servo pattern on a magnetic disc medium prior to assembling the medium in a disc drive is provided in which the medium is first magnetized in a uniform magnetization direction. A plurality of magnetic domains are then thermally written on the medium, one magnetic domain at a time, by individually heating each magnetic domain with a light beam while exposing the magnetic domain to a magnetic field. The magnetic field has an orientation that is opposite to the uniform magnetization direction. The light beam forms an illumination pattern on the medium having a shape that at least partially defines a boundary of each magnetic domain.

A data storage system includes a data storage disc for storing magnetically encoded data and servo information. The data storage disc includes a data layer adapted to be magnetically encoded with data to be written to the data storage disc, and a servo information layer formed beneath the data layer and having magnetic servo pits formed therein to provide servo information. The magnetic servo pits are positioned in portions of the servo information layer which are at least partially directly beneath magnetically encoded data regions on the data layer such that a data head can read both magnetically stored data and servo information from the disc at substantially the same time. A method of fabricating a magnetic data disc is also disclosed.

Buried servo patterned media

A method and apparatus to qualify heads to be used in disc drives. The method and apparatus collect a set of track scan data by moving the head across transitions in a track on a medium. The track scan data is changed based on a difference between a writer width of the head and a nominal track width to produce modified track scan data. Position error signal data is then determined from at least some of the data in the modified set of track scan data. The linearity of the position error signal data is used to qualify the head.
