Methods, systems, and devices for evaluating an earth formation. Methods may include conveying the carrier into a formation borehole; and using measure electrodes, in one mode of measurement, to make current measurements by applying a voltage to each measure electrode in a first set of sensor arrays while making first current measurements; and applying another high frequency voltage to each measure electrode in a second set of sensor arrays while making second current measurements. Optionally, methods include using the measure electrodes, in another mode of measurement, to make further resistivity measurements by applying a voltage to each measure electrode in both sets of sensor arrays while making third current measurements. Methods include combining first current measurements, second current measurements, and third current measurements to simulate a virtual impedance for each measure electrode. Optionally, any two consecutive sensor arrays around the circumference of the tool body are in different sets.

Dual mode balancing in OBM resistivity imaging

A logging tool for performing resistivity measurements on the sidewall of a borehole in an earth formation is provided with a circumferential series of evenly-spaced measurement electrodes providing complete circumferential coverage of resistivity measurements. In one embodiment, the measurement electrodes are carried on a conductive pad circumferentially surrounding an elongate mandrel or tubular. The conductive pad is held at a voltage adapted to focus measurement current into the sidewall of the borehole. Preferably, the pad has dimensions relative to the measurement electrodes and a standoff distance between the measurement electrodes and said borehole wall to effectively focus the measurement current into the borehole wall. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the measurement electrodes are spaced apart by a distance that is less than the width of each measurement electrode, thereby ensuring full circumferential resolution.

Method and apparatus for borehole wall resistivity imaging with full circumferential coverage

A method of estimating a parameter of a formation contacting a borehole with an instrument that includes a mandrel and a pad includes providing a measurement voltage to the pad; applying a biasing voltage to the mandrel while the measurement voltage is applied to the pad; measuring a received current during at least a portion of time the measurement voltage is provided; and estimating the parameter based on the received current.

Measurements made by a multi-component induction logging tool may be corrected for tool eccentricity or the presence of a fracture in the earth formation. The corrected measurements may then be used in conjunction with a multi-array measurement to determine horizontal and vertical formation resistivity.

A multicomponent induction logging tool uses a nonconducting mandrel. A central conducting member including wires that electrically connect at least one of the antennas to another of the antennas. Electrodes disposed about the transmitter antenna form a conductive path through a borehole fluid to the central conducting member.

Use of electrodes and multi-frequency focusing to correct eccentricity and misalignment effects on transversal induction measurements

Disclosed is a method of estimating a property of an earth formation penetrated by a borehole. The method includes conveying a carrier through the borehole and performing a plurality of electrical measurements on the formation using a sensor disposed at the carrier and having a plurality of electrodes disposed in a concentric arrangement wherein a standoff distance between the sensor and a wall of the borehole has an influence on each electrical measurement in the plurality of electrical measurements. The method further includes determining an impedance for each electrical measurement in the plurality of electrical measurements and inputting the determined impedances into an artificial neural network implemented by a processor. The artificial neural network outputs the property wherein the outputted property compensates for the influence of sensor standoff distance on each electrical measurement in the plurality of electrical measurements.

A formation measurement and processing technique which reduces the effects of standoff between a resistivity tool and a borehole wall where the resistivity tool utilizes capacitive coupling between the tool and the formation to obtain resistivity data useful to generate a resistivity image of the formation. Reduction of standoff effects is achieved through the use of multi-frequency, phase sensitive measurements to identify a measured resonance frequency that may be used to produce an image that utilizes measurements least affected by the tool standoff and unknown or unspecified inductance of the tool. Reduction of standoff effects are the most pronounced in the case of the low resistivity formations and oil-based, low-conductive drilling fluids.

An apparatus for detecting a position of a component in an earth formation is disclosed. The apparatus includes: a transmitter configured to emit a first magnetic field into the earth formation and induce an electric current in the component, the transmitter having a first magnetic dipole extending in a first direction; and a receiver for detecting a second magnetic field generated by the component in response to the first magnetic field, the receiver having a second magnetic dipole extending in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. Apparatus and methods are also disclosed for estimating a position of a second borehole being drilled relative to an existing first borehole.

An apparatus, method and computer-readable medium for obtaining a resistivity image of an earth formation. The apparatus includes a downhole assembly configured to be conveyed in a borehole penetrating the earth formation; a plurality of sensor electrodes on the downhole assembly, at least one of the electrodes having a different area than another of the electrodes; and at least one processor configured to: (i) process measurements using each of the sensor electrodes; (ii) process a subset of the measurements substantially unaffected by the different capacitances to produce an image of the borehole wall; and (iii) record the image on a suitable medium.

Multi-resolution borehole resistivity imaging

An apparatus for detecting a position of a component in an earth formation is disclosed. The apparatus includes: a transmitter configured to emit a first magnetic field into the earth formation and induce an electric current in the component, the transmitter having a first magnetic dipole extending in a first direction; and a receiver for detecting a second magnetic field generated by the component in response to the first magnetic field, the receiver having a second magnetic dipole extending in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. A method and computer program product for detecting a position of a component in an earth formation is also disclosed.

The present disclosure provides a method and apparatus for performing resistivity measurements of a borehole wall using a transverse octupole sensor. The sensor may be a resistivity sensor. Higher resolution is obtained with an octupole sensor than with lower-order-pole sensors. For the resistivity case, the ratio of dual-frequency measurements has reduced sensitivity to standoff.

Octupole induction sensors for resistivity imaging in non-conductive muds

An apparatus, method and computer-readable medium for evaluating an earth formation are disclosed. The apparatus includes at least one coil on a logging tool conveyed in a borehole in the earth formation. Passage of a current through the coil induces an electrical current in the earth formation. At least two electrodes associated with the logging tool and in proximity to a wall of the borehole have a potential difference in response to the induced electrical current that is indicative of a property of the earth formation. The at least one coil may be mounted on a mandrel of a downhole assembly. The electrodes may be positioned on a first pad extendable from a mandrel of the downhole assembly.

Method and apparatus for resistivity imaging in boreholes with an antenna and two spaced apart electrodes

A method for simulating a conductivity measured by a resistivity tool disposed in a borehole penetrating a formation, the method including: constructing a main grid extending from the borehole into the formation; constructing an auxiliary grid that is local to the main grid and fitted to a boundary between a first region having a first conductivity and a second region having a second conductivity; discretizing a problem operator on the auxiliary grid applying Maxwell's Equations to a volume represented by the auxiliary local grid, the Maxwell's Equations including a term representing the conductivity of a material in the volume; calculating one-dimensional functions for points on the auxiliary grid; constructing basic functions from the calculated functions; discretizing by the basic functions for points on the main grid; solving the resulting set of equations to obtain the simulated measured conductivity for the resistivity tool; and providing the simulated measured conductivity as output.

An apparatus, method and computer-readable medium for obtaining a resistivity image of an earth formation. The apparatus includes a downhole assembly configured to be conveyed in a borehole penetrating the earth formation; a plurality of sensor electrodes on the downhole assembly, each of the plurality of sensor electrodes having a different capacitance to a wall of the borehole; and at least one processor configured to: (i) process measurements using each of the sensor electrodes; (ii) process a subset of the measurements substantially unaffected by the different capacitances to produce an image of the borehole wall; and (iii) record the image on a suitable medium.
