A PIC comprising an optical edge coupler having a plurality of optical cores within a heterogeneous stack of dielectric layers providing an optical cladding for the optical cores. The layer stack comprises first and second groups of layers, wherein refraction-index differences between individual layers of the same group are much smaller than refraction-index differences between any two layers from different groups. The optical cores are arranged in a plurality of parallel planar arrays enabling a large MFD change. At least one of the arrays is located within the first group of layers, and at least another one of the arrays is located within the second group of layers. End sections of the optical cores are adjacent to an edge of the PIC and may be optically coupled to an external optical fiber or on-chip waveguide of another PIC for a low-loss transfer of optical power therebetween.

Optical edge coupler having a heterogeneous cladding structure

A photonic chip includes a device layer and a port layer, with an optical port located at the port layer. Inter-layer optical couplers are provided for coupling light between the device and port layers. The inter-layer couplers may be configured to couple signal light but block pump light or other undesired wavelength from entering the device layer, operating as an input filter. The port layer may accommodate other light pre-processing functions, such as optical power splitting, that are undesirable in the device layer.

Input waveguide arrangement in a photonic chip

A low loss high extinction ratio on-chip polarizer is disclosed. The polarizer includes an input waveguide taper having an outer waveguiding region that widens in the direction of light propagation along at least a portion of the taper length, and a core waveguiding region that narrows in the direction of light propagation along at least a portion of the taper length, so as to selectively squeeze out light of undesired modes into the outer regions while preserving light of a desired mode in the waveguide core. An output filter section is provided to prevent light from reentering the output waveguide after being squeezed out. An integrated light absorber/deflector may be coupled to the outer waveguiding regions.

Integrated on-chip polarizer

Disclosed herein are a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) including an edge coupler (EC) and method thereof. In some embodiments, the EC is optically coupled to a first waveguide at an inner end of the EC. In some embodiments, the PIC is in contact with an optical fiber at an outer end of the EC. The EC may include a plurality of waveguide cores located on a plurality of waveguide layers. The waveguide cores of the plurality of waveguide cores are located apart from each other and configured to adapt a mode size of a beam of light between a larger mode size at the outer end of the EC and a smaller mode size at the inner end of the EC.

Edge-coupler and methods thereof

In Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based modulators (MZM) input laser light comes in from one side, gets split into two MZI arms, then recombined at an opposite side. Each MZI arm may be phase or intensity modulated depending on the set phase offset, whereby coherent or intensity modulation may be performed which can later be de-coded by a receiver. Ring resonator type modulators (RRM) are compact; however, their phase response is nonlinear, normally limiting their application in coherent phase modulation. However, a combined MZI RRM overcomes the shortcomings of the prior art by providing a novel structure and driving scheme for use with semiconductor photonics that takes advantage of the compactness of ring modulators and the linearity of MZI by setting the ring resonators to resonate at the input laser light wavelength.

For multi-mode interference (MMI) couplers that have a plurality of input and output ports, e.g. 4&#xd7;4, a large number of modes may be supported in the multimode region, e.g. &#x3e;10, as the width of the MMI core grows larger. In order for MMI couplers to form good images, the supported modes preferably have low modal phase error, which can't be achieved using a conventional single layer design. Accordingly, a multi-mode interference (MMI) coupler comprising an MMI core comprising a plurality of waveguide core strips alternating with a plurality of cladding strips solves the aforementioned problems.

A mode-matched waveguide Y-junction with balanced or unbalanced splitting comprises an input waveguide, expanding from an input end to an output end, for expanding the input beam of light along a longitudinal axis; first and second output waveguides extending from the output end of the input waveguide separated by a gap. Ideally, each of the first and second output waveguides includes an initial section capable of supporting a fundamental super mode, and having an inner wall substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a mode splitting section extending from the initial section at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis.

A MOSCAP phase adjuster includes two conductive regions with a thin insulating region therebetween, where charge is accumulated or depleted. In conventional MOSCAP modulators, the conductive and insulating regions are superposed layers, extending horizontally parallel to the substrate, which limits waveguide design and mode confinement, resulting in reduced phase shift performance. An improved MOSCAP phase adjuster and method of fabricating a MOSCAP phase adjuster includes depositing the material for the second conductive region beside and over top of the first conductive region after oxidation, and selectively etching the material to form the second conductive region.
