A lubricant composition containing a metal-containing detergent in an amount to provide at least about 2 TBN to the lubricant, and a dispersant comprising an oleophilic portion comprising at least about 40 carbon atoms and an acid-bearing portion, characterized in having a TAN:TBN ratio of at least about 0.8, exhibits good TBN retention.

Lubricants with good TBN retention

A lubricating composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity, a high molecular weight polyolefin that is at least substantially free of ethylene-derived monomer units, and an overbased metal containing detergent, is capable of reducing intake valve deposits in a direct injection engine.

Lubricating oil composition with anti-mist additive

The present invention relates to a lubricating composition, particularly marine diesel engine lubricating compositions, comprising: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) an asphaltene dispersant comprising an amide group, which may also contain a succinimide group, and which may optionally be used in combination with additional asphaltene dispersants that contain a cyclic headgroup that contains a nitrogen atoms where the additional asphaltene dispersants may also include a succinimide group; and (c) a detergent derived from an alkyl phenol. The invention further provides methods of using such compositions in the operation of engine, particularly marine diesel engines.

Asphaltene dispersant containing lubricating compositions

A marine diesel cylinder is lubricated using a lubricant having a total base number (TBN) of at least about 25, comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a metal-containing detergent component. Forty to 90 percent of the TBN derived from the metal-containing detergent component is provided by calcium detergent; 5 to 40 percent of the TBN by sodium detergent; and 5 to 45 percent by magnesium detergent. At least 50 weight percent of the total detergent substrate is sulfonate and less than 50 weight percent is monomeric or oligomeric substrate comprising one or more units of alkyl-substituted phenol having an alkyl group of 8 to 14 carbon atoms. The lubricant is useful when the marine diesel engine is fueled with a liquid fuel containing at least 2 ppm vanadium.

Marine diesel cylinder lubricant

The invention provides a method of lubricating a marine diesel engine, comprising supplying to said engine a marine diesel cylinder lubricant composition at a feed rate of 0.3 to less than 1.2 g/kW hr, wherein said lubricant composition has a ratio of /&#x3a3;(wt % overbased detergent)/&#x3a3;(wt % of boron from antiwear additives+wt % of phosphorus-containing antiwear additives) of greater than 12.5. The invention further provides a method capable of imparting improved cleanliness and decreased cylinder wear; and reduced deposits.

Method of lubricating a marine diesel engine

A method of lubricating a marine diesel 2-stroke engine comprising: (1) monitoring performance characteristics of said engine; (2) selecting a lubricating composition to modify the performance characteristics of the engine, wherein the lubricating composition is prepared by in-situ controlled blending of at least two different fluids, said fluids comprising: (i) a first fluid comprising an additive package with one or more overbased detergents, and optionally other performance additives; (ii) a second fluid comprising an additive package with one or more neutral detergents or overbased detergents, and optionally other performance additives, with the proviso that the first fluid has a ratio of &#x3a3;(wt % of overbased detergents)/&#x3a3;(wt % of all additives in the fluid) greater than the second fluid; and (iii) a third fluid comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (3) supplying the lubricating composition of step (2) to the engine, with the proviso that the lubricating composition comprises at least one of the first fluid or the second fluid.

Lubricating compositions

A lubricating composition containing (a). at least 3 weight percent of an overbased sulphonate detergent with a metal ratio of 12.5:1 to 40:1; (b). at least 1.5 weight percent of a sulphur containing phenate detergent with a metal ratio of not more than 2.5; and (c). an oil of lubricating viscosity, wherein the sulphur containing phenate contains oligomers of hydrocarbyl phenol with at least 50 wt % of said oligomers in the form of the tetramer or higher oligomers. The composition is suitable for internal combustion engines, particularly marine diesel applications to provide improved cleanliness decreased cylinder wear and reduced deposits.

Lubricating compositions containing sulphonates and phenates

A lubricant in the form of a water or oil insoluble solvent in oil emulsion is described where a base (soluble or dispersible in said oil-insoluble solvent or water) is present in the dispersed phase. These lubricants are beneficial in various applications such as internal combustion engines where the oil needs enough basicity to neutralize any inorganic acids generated by sulfur present in the fuel.
