A method of reducing network traffic includes blocking, at a mobile device, a first channel to reduce network signaling in a network and to reduce battery consumption. The first channel includes a non-common channel. The method includes offloading application traffic of an application onto a second channel. The second channel may include a common channel. The method may include monitoring the application traffic of the application over the second channel, unblocking the first channel based on the monitored application traffic so that the application can perform an action, and re-blocking the first channel after the action has been completed. The method may include unblocking the first channel when user activity is detected, wherein the user activity includes whether the mobile device is being interacted with.

A mobile device is configured for communicating over a shared channel and an application specific channel. The application specific channel is a channel for an application on the mobile device to communicate with an application server. The mobile device is further configured for blocking the application specific channel to offload traffic therefrom to the shared channel. The blocking occurs in response to a screen of the mobile device being off and the blocking includes blocking the application from accessing the application server over the application specific channel.

A network is provided that includes a mobile device and a configurable stub having a stub configuration embedded in the mobile device non-transitory memory. An operating server has an operating server processor and the operating server is configured to send Short Messaging Service (SMS) messages. A processor controlled global service discovery server is configured to receive the stub configuration and to inform the mobile device about the operating server.

A system, a network, and a mobile device are disclosed in which the mobile device includes an embedded stub that interacts with a global service discovery server to obtain information about an operating server that handles communications from the mobile device. The stub causes the mobile device to communicate with the global service discovery server when the mobile device initially boots up, when the mobile device resets; or when a SIM card is changed. The global service discovery server identifies information for the mobile device such as the network operator, the country of use, the IMEI number, a device manufacturer, a carrier, a country of use, a mobile country code (MCC) and/or a mobile network code (MNC). Once the operating server is identified the mobile device and request and receive application software from the operating server.

Systems and methods described herein employ techniques for generation and selective activation (or triggering) of network management policies in a congested network to, for example, prevent further aggravation of network congestion are disclosed. In order to address mobile network congestion it is necessary to be able to enforce network management policies on the devices which are in the a specific congested cell. This presents a challenge as the mobile devices cannot themselves determine if the cell they are currently located in is congested. Additionally, most network operators do not have mechanisms to determine which cells are congested in real-time. Thus, network operators (e.g., cellular providers) can create policies with congestion triggers that are not bound to specific cells to address congestion. The polices can be distributed to clients in the mobile network and selectively activated in congested cell locations (or areas) by the mobile clients.

Selective activation of network management policies of mobile devices in a mobile network

According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a method for signaling optimization in a wireless network utilizing proprietary and non-proprietary protocols. A first session is established between an application on a mobile device and a local proxy on the mobile device, a second session is established between the local proxy and a proxy server not located on the mobile device, and a third session is established between the proxy server and a content server. A byte stream present within the first and second sessions is monitored to identify patterns within the byte stream. If a pattern is found, the pattern is used to determine a behavior of the application. If that behavior is one that is a candidate for optimization, signaling optimization is performed between the application and the content server. Signaling optimization includes dismantling the second session, replaying the pattern to the application via the first session, and replaying the pattern to the content server via the third session.
