A display comprises a matrix comprising a plurality of N rows divided into a plurality of M columns of cells, each cell including a light emitting device; a scan driver providing a plurality of N scan line signals to respective rows of said matrix, each for selecting a respective row of the matrix to be programmed with pixel values; and a data driver providing a plurality of M variable level data signals to respective columns of the matrix, each for programming a respective pixel within a selected row of the matrix with a pixel value. A pulse driver provides a plurality of N driving signals to respective rows of the matrix, each driving signal comprising successive sequences of pulses enabling the cells to emit light according to their programmed pixel values during respective sub-frames of successive frames to be displayed. The data driver is arranged to provide variable level data signals to respective pixels within a selected row of the matrix during a limited number of sub-frames of a frame, the variable data levels corresponding to a programmed value of a plurality of bits of a pixel value for a frame. The data driver is further arranged to provide data signals to respective pixels within a selected row of the matrix during a remaining number of sub-frames of a frame, the data signals each corresponding to a programmed value of a single bit of a pixel value for a frame.

Display using analog and digital subframes

The invention relates to an electrophoretic display device, to a driver circuit for use in the electrophoretic display device and to chargeable or charged pigment particles for use in the electrophoretic display device. The electrophoretic display device comprises a pixel comprising charged pigment particles for determining a pigmentation of the pixel. The pixel comprises an aperture area being a visible part of the pixel determining the pigmentation of the pixel. The pixel further comprises a storage area for storing the charged pigment particles away from the aperture area. The pixel comprises an accumulation electrode arranged at the storage area for accumulating the charged pigment particles away from the aperture area, and comprises a field electrode occupying a field-electrode area being at least a part of the aperture area of the pixel. The charged pigment particles are movable between the accumulation electrode and the field electrode under control of an electric field. A dimension of the charged pigment particles is selected sufficiently small to obtain a uniform distribution of charged pigment particles across the field-electrode area.

Electrophoretic display device

Electrophoretic displays use motion of particles through a fluid to generate images. This invention describes the use of concerted motion of particles together with the solvent to generate optical switching.

Electrophoretic displays

The invention relates to a reflective display () comprising a substrate () and a reflective layer (), e.g. comprising microcapsules () with an electrophoretic suspension arranged to reflect incident light () passing through the substrate (), wherein the substrate () is structured so as to form a plurality of funnel-shaped protrusions () with reflective walls (), the protrusions being oriented with a top end () facing towards the reflective layer and a base end () facing away from the reflective layer. According to this design, light that is reflected at sufficiently large reflection angles will experience one or more reflections by the protrusion walls (). At each reflection the angle of propagation of the light () traveling through the substrate is decreased by twice the angle alpha between the wall () and the normal of the reflective layer ().

Reflective display and method for manufacturing such a display

An electrophoretic display () and a system () implement a method of activating a portion of the electrophoretic display (). The method involves a reception of drawing information (), a determination of at least one drawing-mode waveform () based on the drawing information (), and an addressing of the electrophoretic display () based on the received drawing information () and the drawing-mode waveform ().

An electro-optically active display device including at least one individually addressable pixel, each pixel being provided with an obstructing element, such as a reservoir light shield, a black matrix or a mirror element. A portion of at least one electrical component is positioned beneath the obstructing element in such a way that the portion is not visible for a viewer of the display device.

Electro-optically active device

The invention relates to an electro-optically active display device, comprising at least one individually addressable pixel, each pixel being provided with an obstructing element (), such as a reservoir light shield, a black matrix or a mirror element. According to the invention, a portion of at least one component is positioned beneath the obstructing element in such a way that the portion is not visible for a viewer of the display device.

The electrophoretic multi-color display device has a plurality of cells (&#x2033;, . . . ) with an electrophoretic medium () and pixel electrodes (, . . . ) for selecting a subgroup of cells. A color filter array () is associated with the pixel electrodes. The color filter array () and the pixel electrodes (&#x2033;, . . . ) are provided at the same side of the electrophoretic medium (). Preferably, the cells (&#x2033;, . . . ) of the color filter array () are arranged according to a matrix and are disposed along lines registering with the pixel electrodes (&#x2033;, . . . ). Preferably, an insulating material () with a relatively low refractive index is provided between the pixel electrodes (&#x2033; . . . ) and the color filter array (). Preferably, the insulating material () is selected from the group formed by a fluor-polymer, a low-dielectric inorganic film and a low-dielectric nano-porous film.

Electrophoretic multi-color display device

The invention relates to a display device comprising electrophoretic particles, a display element comprising a pixel electrode and an associated counter electrode, between which a portion of the electrophoretic particles is present, and a controller for supplying a drive signal to the electrodes to bring the display element to a predetermined black or white state, corresponding to the image information to be displayed. In order to improve the refresh time of the display, the controller is further arranged to supply a preset signal preceding the drive signal comprising a preset pulse representing an energy which is sufficient to release the electrophoretic particles at a first position near one of the two electrodes corresponding to a black state, but is too low to enable the particles to reach a second position near the other electrode corresponding to a white state.

Electrophoretic active matrix display device

An electrophoretic display device () comprising one pixel () with an electrophoretic medium (), electrodes (), as well as drive means () by which the pixels can be brought into different optical states. Some time (thold) after the application of an addressing pulse (Paddress) for setting the brightness level (Rw, Rb) of a pixel (), a restore pulse voltage (Prestore) is applied between the electrodes () for restoring the brightness level of a pixel to the set level (Rw, Rb). The restore pulse may be a set of consecutive pulses to bring the drifted brightness level even more smoothly (i.e. less perceivably) back to the original brightness level.

Electrophoretic display device and driving means for restoring the brightness level

Liquid crystal display device ( ) (particularly having a low threshold voltage) provided with means ( ) for compensating the temperature dependence of characteristic voltages of the display device by adapting the frequency at which the pixels are driven. The voltages to be used then do not need to be adapted, notably if they are determined once for the highest occurring drive frequency (which generally occurs at the highest operating temperature).

Liquid crystal display device

A road marking unit (1) according to the invention comprises a house (10) with a light transmissive window (20). In the house (10) is arranged an electro-optic switch (30). In an activated state of the road marking unit (1) the electro-optic switch (30) achieves that light is reflected from the window (20) back to the window (20). In a de-activated state of the road marking unit (1) the electro-optic switch (30) achieves that light from the window (20) is absorbed. The road marking unit (1) of the invention has the advantage that it can also in bright environmental light it can be switched between visible and invisible.

Flat-panel picture display device comprising a picture display panel for modulating the state of polarization of polarized light coupled into said panel in conformity with a picture to be displayed. The light is polarized by means of a reflective polarizer which is integrated or not integrated with the picture display panel. At least a part of the picture display panel functions as an optical waveguide, notably for the beam component b.sub.2 having the state of polarization which is not suitable for modulation. An analyzer is present at a first surface of the picture display panel. The polarizing means in the form of a reflective polarizer are present at a second surface of the picture display panel, which surface is located opposite the first surface. A light-directing system is present at the surface of the polarizer remote from the picture display panel, which system is used for sending the light leaving the picture display panel at this surface without contributing to the formation of the image to the picture display panel again so that it will as yet have a chance of being converted into light having the desired state of polarization.

Flat-panel picture display device

A liquid crystal display device (LCD) comprises two supporting plates (1, 2) which are interconnected by means of a sealing edge (3) and enclose a layer of liquid crystalline material (4). Inter alia, for an improved support upon scratching and breaking of the device, the sealing edge (3) is circumferentially provided with protrusions (3A-3D) which extend from the sealing edge (3) substantially to the edge (11) of at least one of the two supporting plates (1, 2).
