A composite structure is provided including a first fabric and a second fabric. A substantially elongate and substantially rigid first member is spaced apart from and coupled with the first fabric via the second fabric. A resin substantially is infused into the first fabric and the second fabric, and substantially encapsulates the first member to form a unitary structure.

Composite fabric with rigid member structure

A toroidal shaped or ring fuel tank located within the loft line of a blended wing body aircraft is disclosed. The ring tank may be used in an aircraft to store liquid hydrogen fuel with a reduced tank weight. The ring tank may be continuous with no tank end domes typically found on cylindrical pressure tanks, reducing tank weight for a given fuel volume. The ring tank configuration avoids increasing the aerodynamic shape of the aircraft and does not encroach on usable passenger or payload areas of the aircraft. In one example the ring tank may be configured in a nose down position such that the forward portion of the ring tank is outside the pressurized cabin area.

Hydrogen fueled blended wing body ring tank

A method of forming a unitary, composite structural member, and a member formed in accordance with the process. The process involves stitching a plurality of warp knit panel sections together to generally form a plurality of independent panel sections. The sections are placed within the dies of a molding tool such that a rib portion of each section aligns. Inflatable bladders are then slipped into voids formed in between the various panel sections of the assembly. The bladders are inflated to hold with one another. Resin is then infused into the panels that make up the assembly. The assembly is then cured. When the panels are removed from the molding tool a unitary, complexly shaped, composite structural member is formed.

Molding process and apparatus for producing unified composite structures

A hollow core fan blade for a gas turbine engine, having stitched composite skins and substructure, is fabricated using a resin transfer molding approach which results in a damage tolerant and cost-efficient structure. The fan blade is comprised of a stitched composite cover that is in-turn stitched to a spar and rib-like substructure made of similar carbon fiber materials. A titanium leading edge, root section, and tip closeout member are added to the stitched carbon fibers and placed inside a forming die. Resin is infused, after which the blade assembly, having predetermined design characteristics, is cured by heating the forming die and pressurizing the part internally with a set of inflatable bladders which ultimately yields a rigid fan blade component.

Stitched composite fan blade

A hollow core fan blade for a gas turbine engine, having a continuous leading edge, is fabricated using a four-sheet superplastic forming/diffusion bonding process which results in a cost-efficient and lightweight, yet strong, structure. The rotor blade is comprised of a face sheet which has a 180 degree bend therein so that the two face sheet ends are aligned. Bonded to opposing sides of the face sheet are first and second core sheets, between which is the hollow core. To fabricate the blade, a core sheet assembly is inserted inside the prepared face sheet, thereby forming a Ti-Pack (titanium pack) assembly having a plurality of pressure-tight cells. The Ti-Pack is inserted into a cavity within a die, after which the rotor blade, having predetermined design characteristics, is superplastically formed by heating the die and selectively pressurizing the plurality of cells.
