A business method for use in classifying patient samples. The method includes steps of collecting case samples representing a clinical phenotypic state and control samples representing patients without said clinical phenotypic state. Preferably the system uses a mass spectrometry platform system to identify patterns of polypeptides in said case samples and in the control samples without regard to the specific identity of at least some of said polypeptides. Based on identified representative patterns of the state, the business method provides for the marketing of diagnostic products using representative patterns. Compositions and methods are provided for performing capillary electrophoresis using a composition comprising in combination in an aqueous buffered medium a coating polymer and a sieving polymer, where the sieving polymer is more hydrophilic than the coating polymer and is present in greater amount. Of particular interest are uncrosslinked acrylamide polymer mixtures for coating plastic channels and providing sieving for performing DNA separations in microfluidic devices. Polyacrylamide or N,N-dimethyl acrylamide is used with a N,N-dialkyl acrylamide copolymer, either separately or together for sieving and coating, serving as the medium in capillary electrophoresis DNA separations.

Electrophoretic media are provided comprising at least un-crosslinked polymers which have a temperature reversible transition from low viscosity to high viscosity, so as to be pourable at one temperature, while providing sieving properties at another temperature. Optionally included with the un-crosslinked polymers having a reversible temperature responsive viscosity change are gelling agents and polymers which do not have the reversible temperature responsive viscosity change. The subject compositions have excellent clarity, provide excellent separation and resolution, handling properties, and mechanical strength. The compositions are compatible with transfer of separated components from the gel to an accepting membrane.
