A holster for docking a portable radio is provided. The holster is configured with a GND extension path that provides an antenna counterpoise for an external antenna of the portable radio. The holster is formed of a housing () having a belt attachment element () extending therefrom and a GND contact () integrated into therein, the a GND contact for coupling to a corresponding radio GND of the docked radio. The GND extension path extends from GND contact () through a first conductive element () of the holster housing to a second conductive element () embedded in the belt attachment element of the holster.

Holster with embedded coupling element for extending radio antenna range

A method of constructing an antenna of a portable communication device. The method includes wrapping a conductive element around a flexible support, coupling the conductive element and the flexible support to a rigid connector to assemble an antenna core, and coating the antenna core with a room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone layer. The method further includes fitting a first half of a silicone rubber sheath and a second half of a silicone rubber sheath around the antenna core, compression molding the first half of the silicone rubber sheath and the second half of the silicone rubber sheath around the antenna core, and bonding, by the RTV silicone layer, the silicone rubber sheath to the antenna core.

External antenna for portable communication device

A portable radio is provided that performs an impedance measurement to determine a radio frequency (RF) load type connected to an antenna port of the portable radio. The portable radio includes an impedance measurement circuit and a tunable matching circuit operatively coupled thereto through an RF switch A sweep generator injects an LMR frequency sweep to the RF load during non-transmit or non-receive time slots for the impedance measurement. The tunable matching circuit is configured as a radio frequency (RF) bypass during the impedance measurement, thereby enabling the impedance measurement circuit to directly measure the impedance of the RF load coupled to the RF port and identify the RF load as either a land mobile radio (LMR) antenna or equipment (wideband load). When the RF load is determined to be an LMR antenna, then the matching circuitry is tuned for the identified antenna. When the RF load is determined to be wideband equipment, then the matching circuitry remains bypassed.

Portable radio providing radio frequency (RF) load detection, identification, and configuration

A converged device with dual RFPA technology for a dynamic switchable mode. One example provides a communication device comprising a RF transmitter system and a controller. The RF transmitter system includes a plurality of RFPAs, each RFPA having a biasing system and outputting an output signal, and a summing junction, wherein the output signal of each RFPA are combined to form an output RF transmitter signal. The controller is configured to control the biasing state of each biasing system to a nominal bias state for a first mode of the communication device. The controller is configured to control a first plurality of offset voltages applied to each biasing system for a second mode of the communication device. The controller is configured to control a second plurality of offset voltages applied to each biasing system for a third mode of the communication device.

Dynamic RFPA operating modes for a converged communication device

An antenna connector for a portable communication device including, in one implementation, a housing bracket, a core mounting member, a front mounting member, and a back mounting member. The housing bracket includes an antenna barrel that is configured to engage a ferrule antenna connector. The core mounting member includes a radio-frequency (RF) switch that includes a ground barrel, a first electrical contact, and a second electrical contact. The second electrical contact is configured to disconnect from the first electrical contact when a coaxial connector engages completely with the ground barrel. The front mounting member includes a front guiding section that is configured to connect with the core mounting member. The front guiding section is further configured to align the ground barrel with the antenna barrel. The back mounting member includes a back guiding section to keep the core mounting member connected to the front guiding section.

A portable communication device and antenna device with removeable matching circuit is provided. The antenna device includes: a base; an antenna element; an electrical connector at the base; a matching circuit removably positioned between the electrical connector and the antenna element, the electrical connector and the antenna element in electrical communication via the matching circuit; and a shell removably attached to the base, the shell surrounding and protecting the matching circuit. The portable communication device includes the antenna device, for example removably attached to an antenna receptacle.

The antenna device comprises: a base, the base being electrically conducting; an insulating core extending from the base; a clip attached to the base, the clip being electrically conducting, the clip and the base configured to cooperate such that: the base frictionally retains the clip; and the clip at least partially rotates around the base while making electrical contact thereto; and an antenna element extending from the clip along the insulating core, the antenna element shaped to at least partially rotate around the insulating core as the clip rotates at least partially around the base.

A communication device and a detachable antenna with dynamic antenna tuning is provided. The detachable antenna comprises: an electrically insulating base; a main antenna and a first antenna element, at the base, respectively operable at independent first and second given frequencies. The device further comprises: a memory associating the first and second given frequencies; an antenna port configured to detachably receive the base of the detachable antenna; a second antenna element, at the antenna port, operable to wirelessly interact with the first antenna element when the base of the detachable antenna is received at the antenna port; a circuit configured to detect wireless interactions between the second antenna element and the first antenna element; and a controller configured to: select the first given frequency using the second given frequency, as detected via the circuit; and, thereafter wirelessly communicate via the main antenna operated at the first given frequency.

Communication device and antenna with dynamic antenna tuning

An antenna is provided having a primary helical coil () and a secondary helical coil () contra-wound relative to the primary helical coil. Switchable coupling between the coils allows the antenna response to switch from lower to higher frequency responses within the same Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band. A bandwidth of the same physical length antenna can be increased up to twice the bandwidth or for a fixed bandwidth, the antenna length can be shortened. For the high frequency band, when the secondary helix is disconnected from the primary helix, the primary coil operates as a interferer notch out to improve interference rejection, to reject unwanted signals from nearby radios transmitting in frequencies separated by duplex spacing, such as Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) and cellular Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication bands.

Dual contra-wound helical antenna for a communication device

A method and apparatus for a dual-feedback, amplifier limiter for providing a conditioned radio-frequency signal. The dual-feedback, amplifier limiter includes an input that receives a radio-frequency signal and a stacked amplifier including an input node coupled to the input, an output node, a first transistor configured as a common-base amplifier, and a second transistor configured as a common-emitter amplifier. The dual-feedback, amplifier limiter further includes an output coupled to the output node of the stacked amplifier. The output provides the conditioned radio-frequency signal. The dual-feedback, amplifier limiter further includes a radio-frequency feedback circuit coupled to the stacked amplifier. The radio-frequency feedback circuit includes a passive radio-frequency dependent reactive element in series with a radio-frequency feedback circuit resistor. The dual-feedback, amplifier limiter further includes an envelope control feedback circuit coupled to the stacked amplifier and including a current mirror and a reactive element loop filter.

A short, efficient antenna utilizing a floating coax transmission line over ground or overlapping wire feed structure for reduced antenna size for use in handheld radios. An asymmetric transmission line radiator having a length (L) is oriented substantially planar to and proximal to a truncated ground plane, and having at one end an input/output connector, and at an other end a feed point at least one of above a ground plane and proximal to its edge. An exciter antenna in a form of a plate or bent wire is coupled to the feed point and is exterior to the edge of the ground plane and oriented substantially orthogonal to the ground plane, the exciter antenna having a larger dimension length (L) that is at least 50% smaller than the length L. The overall length of a perimeter of the antenna is approximately &#xbd; a wavelength of a center frequency of the antenna.
