Provided are a family of node structures, representing 3-dimensional objects using depth image, adoptable into MPEG-4 AFx for polygonal 3D representations. Family formats include DepthImage, PointTexture, and OctreeImage. DepthImage represents an object through union of its reference images and corresponding depth maps. PointTexture represents the object as a set of colored points parameterized by projection onto a 2D grid. OctreeImage converts same data into hierarchical octree-structured voxel model, set of compact reference images, and a tree of voxel-image correspondence indices. DepthImage and OctreeImage have animated versions, where reference images are replaced by videostreams. DIBR formats are convenient for 3D model construction from 3D range-scanning and multiple source video data. MPEG-4 framework allows construction of a variety of representations from the DIBR formats, providing flexible tools for effective 3D models work. DIBR format compression is achieved by application of image (video) compression techniques to depth maps and reference images (videostreams).

Apparatus and method for depth image-based representation of 3-dimensional object

A family of node structures for representing 3-dimensional objects using depth image are provided. These node structures can be adopted into MPEG-4 AFX for conventional polygonal 3D representations. Provided are an adaptive rendering apparatus and method using a hierarchical structure in a 3D image and a computer-readable recording medium storing a computer program for executing the adaptive rendering method. The adaptive rendering apparatus includes a cell data provision unit, which divides an original 3D image into a plurality of lattice cells that are connected to one another in a hierarchical structure according to predetermined rendering conditions and outputs a plurality of cell data of an area of the original 3D image corresponding to the lattice cells, and a rendered image generation unit, which generates a 3D rendered image by arranging the cell data output from the cell data provision unit according to the hierarchical structure. A lattice cell belonging to a particular level in the hierarchical structure is capable of being divided into a plurality of lattice cells belonging to a level directly below the particular level, and each of the lattice cells in the level directly below the particular level is smaller than the lattice cell of the particular level. A lattice cell belonging to a particular level in the hierarchical structure is capable of being divided into 8 smaller lattice cells belonging to a level directly below the particular level. Accordingly, it is possible to adjust the quality of a rendered image and the speed of generating the rendered image and to precisely render both a 3D object image and a 3D scenic image.

Provided is a method and apparatus for representation and rendering of three-dimensional still and animated objects, using Binary Volumetric Octree. The three-dimensional object representation based on depth images, requiring relatively small storage space and allowing for fast and high quality rendering. Original data of a three-dimensional object are converted into Binary Volumetric Octree (BVO) format, where color is attributed to each BVO vertex corresponding to coordinates of points belonging to object surface, said color being the average of colors of object surface points whose coordinates are inside a cube representing a three-dimensional image element, voxel; the BVO is rendered by hierarchical traversal of the octree from root vertex to leaves so that to obtain local three-dimensional coordinates of centers of voxels corresponding to BVO leaves, to transform the obtained three-dimensional coordinates into two-dimensional coordinates of the voxel center and information of size of the projected voxel image, and to generate for each BVO leaf and display a corresponding splat covering area of the projected voxel image and using color information, the three-dimensional object being visualized by a plurality of the displayed splats.
