An example microfluidic structure can include a first microfluidic channel segment in a first elevation plane, a second microfluidic channel segment in a second elevation plane, and a transverse microfluidic channel segment connecting the first microfluidic channel segment to the second microfluidic channel segment. An interior pillar can be positioned at the transverse microfluidic channel segment. The interior pillar can have a tapered downstream edge. The tapered downstream edge can be angled in the first or second elevation plane at an acute angle. A fluid cross-sectional area can increase in the fluid flow direction along the tapered downstream edge.

Microfluidic structures with interior pillars

In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a chemical lysis system is described. The chemical lysis system includes a microfluidic channel to serially feed individual cells from a volume of cells to at least one chemical lysing device. Each chemical lysing device includes at least one lysing chamber to receive, from the microfluidic channel, a single cell to be lysed. The chemical lysing device also includes an orifice disposed in each lysing chamber to receive a lysing agent and a sensor to detect a state within the lysing chamber. A controller of the chemical lysis system analyzes a ruptured cell.

Chemical lysis systems

The present disclosure is drawn to inertial pumps. An inertial pump can include a microfluidic channel, a fluid actuator located in the microfluidic channel, and a check valve located in the microfluidic channel. The check valve can include a moveable valve element, a narrowed channel segment located upstream of the moveable valve element, and a blocking element formed in the microfluidic channel downstream of the moveable valve element. The narrowed channel segment can have a width less than a width of the moveable valve element so that the moveable valve element can block fluid flow through the check valve when the moveable valve element is positioned in the narrowed channel segment. The blocking element can be configured such that the blocking element constrains the moveable valve element within the check valve while also allowing fluid flow when the moveable valve element is positioned against the blocking element.

Inertial pumps

An example microfluidic structure can include a first microfluidic channel segment in a first elevation plane, a second microfluidic channel segment in a second elevation plane, and a transverse microfluidic channel segment connecting the first microfluidic channel segment to the second microfluidic channel segment. An angled exterior wall segment can be at the transverse microfluidic channel segment. The angled exterior wall segment can be angled in the first or second elevation plane at an acute angle with respect to a direction of fluid flow through the first or second microfluidic channel segment. A fluid cross-sectional area can increase in the fluid flow direction along the angled exterior wall segment.

Examples herein involve sorting a droplet including a biologic sample. In a particular example, sorting a droplet including a biologic sample includes generating a droplet including a biologic sample and a pH sensitive surfactant, and heating a nucleic acid molecule in the biologic sample. The pH sensitive surfactant may change the surface tension of the droplet responsive to amplification of the nucleic acid molecule. The droplet may be sorted into one of a plurality of sorting lanes based on the surface tension of the droplet, where a sorting lane among the plurality of sorting lanes is associated with droplets including the amplified nucleic acid molecule. A determination of whether the droplet includes the amplified nucleic acid molecule may be performed by detecting passage of the droplet in one of the plurality of sorting lanes.

Sorting a droplet including a biologic sample

An example microfluidic mixer can include an inlet microfluidic channel portion and a fluid splitting channel portion including an overpass microfluidic channel to receive fluid from a first side of the inlet microfluidic channel portion and an underpass microfluidic channel to receive fluid from a second side of the inlet microfluidic channel portion, where the underpass microfluidic channel extends under the overpass microfluidic channel such that the channels overlap at their respective downstream ends. A fluid recombining channel portion is downstream of the fluid splitting portion and includes an angled recombining surface having an acute angle with respect to a direction of fluid flow, where the angled recombining surface is between the downstream ends of the overpass and underpass microfluidic channels. An outlet microfluidic channel portion is fluidly connected downstream from the fluid recombining channel portion.

Microfluidic mixers

In some examples, a fluid dispensing device includes a fluid chamber, a heating element adjacent the fluid chamber, and an orifice adjacent the fluid chamber. A ratio of an area of a surface of the heating element to an orifice area of the orifice is greater than or equal to 3, where the surface of the heating element faces the fluid chamber.

In example implementations, an apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a channel, an energy source, and a transfection chamber. The channel includes an indentation to hold a cell. The energy source is to apply a shockwave to the cell in the channel to porate the cell. The transfection chamber is to store a reagent to be inserted into the cell after the cell is porated.

A microfluidic valve may include a first portion of a liquid conduit to contain a fluid, a second portion of the liquid conduit to contain a liquid and a constriction between the first portion and the second portion and across which a capillary meniscus is to form between the fluid and liquid, the constriction comprising an edge along a ceiling of the constriction.

In one example, a non-transitory processor readable medium having instructions thereon that when executed cause an additive manufacturing machine to expose build material to a light source emitting monochromatic light within a band of wavelengths that includes a peak light absorption of a liquid coalescing agent to be dispensed on to the build material.

Lighting for additive manufacturing

An example self-priming microfluidic structure can include a microfluidic channel including a floor and a ceiling. A channel height is defined as a distance between the floor and the ceiling. A channel height step can be in the floor, or ceiling, or both. The channel height downstream of the channel height step can be greater than the channel height upstream of the channel height step. An interior pillar can be positioned in the microfluidic channel extending from the floor to the ceiling. The interior pillar can include a widening portion at an upstream end of the interior pillar and a tapering portion at a downstream end of the interior pillar. The interior pillar can overlap the channel height step so that the interior pillar is partially upstream of the channel height step and partially downstream of the channel height step.

Self-priming microfluidic structures

A disposable microfluidic cassette can include a substrate and an engagement feature associated with the substrate to removably join the cassette with a cassette-receiver of an analytical system. A microfluidic network can be carried by the substrate. The microfluidic network can include a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, and a sample manipulation portion fluidly coupling the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet. An ejector can be associated with the microfluidic network to move fluid out of the disposable microfluidic cassette via the fluid outlet.

Disposable microfluidic cassettes

In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a cell sorting device is described. The cell sorting device includes a microfluidic channel to serially transport individual cells from a volume of cells along a flow path. A sensor disposed in the microfluidic channel distinguishes between a cell to be analyzed and waste fluid. The cell sorting device includes at least two fluid transport devices disposed within the microfluidic channel. The at least two fluid transport devices include a cell ejector to, responsive to detection of a cell to be analyzed, eject the cell to be analyzed from the cell sorting device and a waste transport device to direct the waste fluid to a waste reservoir.

A nucleic acid amplifier may include a sample preparation zone, a fluid ejector, an amplification zone and a capillary break between the amplification zone and the fluid ejector.

An example device includes an array of sensor modules. A sensor module includes a body to be positioned in alignment with a planar target, a light source coupled to the body to emit light to the planar target along a source optical path, and a plurality of light sensors coupled to the body. Each light sensor is to sense a different wavelength of light received from the planar target along a sensor optical path. The sensor optical path is different from the source optical path. The bodies of the array of sensor modules are arranged in a planar tiling pattern with respect to a longitudinal axis of the planar target.
