Disclosed herein are components, systems, and methods of a scanning system that operates in a retail environment to deter and prevent theft of items. The systems and methods include a plurality of imagers to capture a plurality of images of the item, and identifying key feature locations of the item based on the captured images. The systems and methods include a scanner to read a machine-readable symbol attached to the item, and accessing a database that includes stored key feature data associated with the specific machine-readable symbol attached to the item. The systems and methods further include one or more processors that generate key feature data for the item based on the key feature locations, compares the stored key feature data with the generated key feature data, and determines whether the stored key feature data matches the generated key feature data to a degree sufficient to surpass a predetermined threshold.

The disclosure includes a fixed retail scanner including a data reader, comprising a main board including one or more processors including a system processor, one or more camera modules, and an artificial intelligence (AI). The system processor is configured to transmit image data received from the one or more camera modules responsive to one or more event triggers detected by the system processor, and wherein the AI accelerator is configured to perform analysis based on an AI engine local to the AI accelerator in response to the event trigger. A remote server may also be operably coupled to the fixed retail scanner through the multi-port network switch, the remote server having a remote AI engine stored therein, wherein the local AI engine within the fixed retail scanner is a simplified AI model relative to the remote AI engine within the remote server.

A device includes: an image sensor to capture images of an object within an FOV, a guide projector and a processor. The processor is to analyze some of the images to detect entry of an encoded data marking carried by the object into the FOV, and in response to detecting such entry into the FOV: operate the guide projector to project a visual guide onto the object to guide movement of the encoded data marking to a first location indicated by the visual guide within the FOV; analyze more of the images to detect such movement to the first location, and then to a second location within the FOV; and in response to the movement to the second location, interpret the movement to the second location as receipt of manual input; and in response to the manual input, transmit data decoded from the encoded data marking to another device.

A projection system includes a light source and a lens. The light source includes a first light and a second light that both are positioned within a light source plane. The lens defines a principal axis and a lens plane that is normal to the principal axis. The light source is positioned relative to the lens such that the light source plane is oblique to the lens plane. The orientation of the light source relative to the lens enables the projection system to deliver information to a worker performing a task about the task being performed from a remote location that is outside of the area in which the worker is performing the task.

A location, dimension, and height of an object can be determined and measured using shadows. The object is located on a surface and an array of lights is mounted over the surface and shines on the object. The surface can be switchable between a translucent state and a transparent state. A colored shadow occurs based on the color of the light that shines on the object, where red, green, and blue are the typical colors used to provide shadows. A camera that is located below the surface captures an image of the shadows. The camera can be a color camera or a monochrome camera. The image is processed using thresholding to segment the different types of shadows that can occur. With the shadows, calculations can be made to determine the location, dimension, and height of the object.

System and method for item location, delineation, and measurement

A data reading system and method, such as for reading optical codes on objects being passed through a read zone, including one or more imagers and at least one illumination module having a reflector housing that includes a baffle structure with a first inner surface and a second inner surface, and a light source disposed at the rear end of the reflector housing and operative to generate illumination out through the baffle structure along an outgoing illumination path, wherein at least one of the inner surfaces of the baffle structure comprises a dielectric material operative to exhibit high reflectivity to light rays from the light source impinging at a high incidence angle and to exhibit low reflectivity to light rays from the light source impinging at a low incidence angle, thereby minimizing stray light impinging on the eyes of the operator while maximizing on-target illumination.

A presentation scanner allows an operator to easily place an object being scanned within the scanner's field of view in order to enhance usability of the scanner. A partially transmitting and partially reflecting surface, like a mirror, is used. An aiming pattern or target indicator is projected from an aiming source to the surface. The aiming pattern or target indicator is seen by an operator who aligns the object, which is reflected from the surface back to the operator, to be placed over or within the aiming pattern that appears at the surface. Once aligned, a camera captures the image of the optical code.

In a scanner-scale system for passing items through a read zone over a weigh platter of the scanner-scale, the system including an item overhang detection system operable for providing an output upon sensing that an item overhangs beyond an edge of the weigh platter, systems and methods are disclosed for using output from the item overhang detection system to both (1) reduce erroneous weighing upon sensing that an item overhangs beyond an edge of the weigh platter (such as by alerting the operator that an item overhang condition has been detected and thus prompting the operator to reposition the item so as to be fully on scale) and (2) initiate an alternate function of the scanner-scale independent of weighing operation.

A control subsystem determines based on the characteristics of light from a secondary illumination source reflected off optics of a data collection device whether a display screen of an electronic device (e.g., smartphone, smartwatch, tablet computer) are in a field of view of the data collection device, and switches operational modes accordingly. Thus, the control subsystem can employ a Fresnel pattern for such determination. The data collection device can operate in a diffuse reading mode, characterized by active illumination and/or relatively fast exposure times. The data collection device can operate in a reflective reading mode, characterized by a lack of active illumination and/or relatively slow exposure times. Characteristics can include the number of reflections versus a number of air-substrate interfaces and/or a relative intensity of the reflections produced by successive air-substrate interfaces in a path of the light.

A machine-readable symbol reader can include a housing, a window, an illumination source, a wedge-shaped optical element, and a sensor array. Illumination can be coupled into the optical element through a base surface of the optical element and out of the optical element through a leg surface of the optical element. Illumination beams coupled out of the optical element through the leg surface can be parallel or substantially parallel to one another, and can exit the machine-readable symbol reader at a grazing angle to illuminate a machine-readable symbol at a grazing angle.

An information gathering and decoding apparatus includes two information gathering devices that communicate with one another, preferably wirelessly. The two information gathering devices may be used substantially simultaneously to process one, or multiple, customer orders. Customer order information is sent from one information gathering device to the other, and only one of the information gathering devices communicates with a computer system to send information from both of the information gathering devices to the computer system as if the information originated from the one information gathering device. Communication between the two information gathering devices combined with a microprocessor in at least one of the information gathering devices may allow the information gathering and decoding apparatus to be used with existing computer systems, such as point of sale systems, preferably without modifying the computer system. One information gathering device may pre-qualify customers to purchase restricted items. An optical code or data imaging system and method for forming image data from an item bearing an optical code present in a read volume, including an image splitter, such as a dichroic mirror, operative to transmit light of a first wavelength range from a first field of view of the item toward the imager and reflect light of a second wavelength range from a second field of view of the item toward the imager. The incoming images from both the first and second fields of view are focused, at least primarily, by the same focusing optics and are detected by the same detecting portions or preferably at least some overlapping portions of the imager.

System and method for multi-view imaging of optical codes using chromatic path splitting

An improvement is made to a scanning device to increase item throughput at the point of sale (POS). The scanning device implements a mirror that allows a cashier to see hidden or obscured optical codes or bar codes on items. The mirror can reflect an aiming beam from a camera, which also allows the cashier to correctly scan the optical codes or bar codes. The mirror and camera can incorporate different properties to enable both the cashier and a customer to stand on opposite sides of the scanning device and scan items.
