The present disclosure relates to a laser system for processing a material. The system may make use of a laser configured to intermittently generate a first laser pulse of a first duration and a first average power, at a spot on a surface of the material being processed, and a second laser pulse having a second duration and a second peak power. The second duration may be shorter than the first duration by a factor of at least 100, and directed at the spot. The second laser pulse is generated after the first laser pulse is generated. The first laser pulse is used to heat the spot on the surface of the material, while the second laser pulse induces a melt motion and material ejection of molten material from the melt pool.

Laser drilling and machining enhancement using gated CW and short pulsed lasers

Systems for processing a material by submerging the material in a fluid and directing laser pulses at the fluid and the material for processing the material. An embodiment removes the surface of concrete, brick, or rock or minerals in a relatively gentle, energy-efficient, and controlled manner that also confines the material that is removed.

Laser-driven hydrothermal processing

A laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing system having a powder dispenser that provides powder layers on a build platform; a laser fusion system that fuses the powder layers, wherein spatter particles are produce on the powder layers; and a powder bed sweeping system that sweeps the spatter particles from the powder layers. The powder bed sweeping system includes a brush that has bristles that contact the spatter particles and sweeps the spatter particles from the powder layers.

Additive manufacturing powder spreading technology to mitigate surface defects

An intelligent feed forward model to control additive manufacturing (AM) laser powder bed fusion process and reduce spattering whereby defects are eliminated by controlling the laser power and reducing spattering through a computer model. This application describes using a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller to create a power map that reduces spattering.

Controlling AM spatter and conduction

A high-power laser beam with an arbitrary intensity profile is produced. Such beam has a variety of uses including for laser materials processing such as powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. Several challenges in additive manufacturing are mitigated with the present non-uniform intensity laser profiles. Nonuniform shapes include a set of intensity pixels in a line that could print a wide stripe area instead of just a single line. One example uses the multimode interference pattern from the output of a ribbon fiber which is imaged onto a work piece. The interference pattern is controlled to allow turning on or off of 'pixels' along a line which can be used to shape the beam and form the additively manufactured part.

User defined intensity profile laser beam

The present disclosure relates to a method of producing a product through additive manufacturing with heat treatment. The method involves using a fusing beam to melt powder particles disposed on a substrate, where the fusing beam is impressed with a two dimensional pattern containing image information from a first layer to be printed. The fused powder particles are then heat treated with a beam impressed with an additional two dimensional pattern. The additional two dimensional pattern has image information from the first layer to achieve heat treatment of the product. The heat treatment is completed prior to laying down additional new layers of material. The heat treatment is an annealing operation. The method may further involve providing a new layer of powdered material on top of the layer of fused powder particles subsequent to the heat treatment, and repeating the melting and heat treating operations in a layer-by-layer fashion using the two dimensional pattern and the additional two dimensional pattern, until the part is completed.

Containers and refractory metal coating therefore for containing radioactive materials

The present disclosure relates to a powdered bed fusion additive manufacturing (PBFAM) apparatus. The apparatus uses a container for holding a quantity of powdered material. The container has a bottom wall for supporting the powdered material, wherein the bottom wall is made from the same material as the powdered material. A temperature sensing subsystem is coupled to a portion of the container for detecting a temperature of the container. A laser generates an optical beam directed at the powdered material held by the container for melting the powdered material. A controller receives temperature information from the temperature sensing subsystem and determines an absorptivity of the powdered material based on the temperature information.

Compact absorptivity measurement system for additive manufacturing

An apparatus for use in a friction stir operation, such as friction stir welding (FSW) or friction stir processing (FSP). The apparatus may have a rotating tool adapted to be plunged into a material, where the material is susceptible to being softened by heating. The rotating tool may further be adapted to be advanced along a surface of the material. An optical energy generating subsystem may be used to heat a portion of the material using optical energy as the tool is advanced along the material.

System and method for light assisted friction stir processing and welding of metallic and non-metallic materials

An additive manufacturing system having a heat source for melting powder particles in a desired shape and pattern to produce a product. A secondary heat source is used for heat treating the product to achieve heat treatment. The secondary heat source is used to peen or anneal residual stresses caused by the additive manufacturing process.

A system for detecting pressure, acoustic or ultrasound waves within an entity having a surface including the steps of attaching a signal converting material to the surface. The waves are generated by direct ejection from the surface, generation via energy deposition on the surface, generated spontaneously or, generated by directing light energy to the light absorbing target. The absorbing target subsequently generates acoustic pressure waves. The acoustic waves propagate to the surface of the entity and the signal converting material, wherein the acoustic pressure waves create vibrations in the signal converting material; and detecting the waves in the signal converting material with an optical detection system. Information about the absorbing target is obtained by the absorbing target reflecting the waves. The signal converting material can be a gel-like material containing optical elements, a multi-layer patch, or other material.

Non-contact optical system for detecting ultrasound waves from a surface

A method and system for calorimetrically measuring the temperature-dependent absorptivity of a homogeneous material dimensioned to be thin and flat with a predetermined uniform thickness and a predetermined porosity. The system includes a material holder adapted to support and thermally isolate the material to be measured, an irradiation source adapted to uniformly irradiate the material with a beam of electromagnetic radiation, and an irradiation source controller adapted to control the irradiation source to uniformly heat the material during a heating period, followed by a cooling period when the material is not irradiated. A thermal sensor measures temperature of the material during the heating and cooling periods, and a computing system first calculates temperature-dependent convective and radiative thermal losses of the material based on the measured temperature of the material during the cooling period when beam intensity is zero, followed by calculation of the temperature-dependent absorptivity of the material based on the temperature-dependent convective and radiative thermal losses determined from the cooling period.

System and method for the direct calorimetric measurement of laser absorptivity of materials

A system for aerially surveying an area where a plane may have crashed in water and locating pings from the plane's black box using a laser on an aerial platform that produces laser pulses; using a launch telescope to direct the laser pulses to the water producing scattering from the laser pulses and a continuous stream of backscatter; using a receiving telescope to collect the continuous stream of backscatter; using an interferometer operatively connected to the receiving telescope to produce two outputs, wherein one output is the continuous stream of backscatter, and wherein the other output is a delayed replica of the first output; and using a data collection and analysis unit operatively connected to the interferometer to produce a measurement of the sound.
