An end mill for shouldering and/or slotting applications includes at least one tooth including a cutting edge. The cutting edge includes a first sub-edge extending rearwardly from a cutting end face and a second sub-edge extending rearwardly from the first sub-edge. An angle transition intersection defines where the first sub-edge ends and the second sub-edge starts. The angle transition intersection is located generally between 20% to 75% of an effective cutting length from a cutting end face and more specifically at a location within the general location where there is an increase in the rake angle and/or a significant increase in the helix angle of the cutting edge.

A front and back chamfering rotary milling cutter includes a cutter body including an insert pocket and a star-shaped indexable cutting insert releasably retained in the pocket. The cutting insert has star-shaped upper and lower surfaces connected by a peripheral surface intersecting each of the upper and lower surfaces. The cutting insert includes a plurality of circumferentially alternating inner and outer corner portions. A cutting portion is defined by each outer corner portion together with an adjacent first inner corner portion rotationally forward thereof and an adjacent second inner corner portion located rotationally rearward thereof. Each cutting portion includes a front chamfering cutting edge extending from the outer corner portion to the first inner corner portion and a back chamfering cutting edge extending from the outer corner portion to the second inner corner portion.

Star-shaped cutting insert for a front and back chamfering rotary milling cutter

A cutting insert having two end surfaces and a peripheral surface, the end surfaces located on opposite sides of a mid-plane, each end surface having three primary apexes and three secondary apexes. Six cutting portions are formed along the intersection of the peripheral surface and the end surfaces. Each cutting portion has a first cutting edge and a second cutting edge extending transversely thereto. A ramping cutting edge extends between the second cutting edge of each cutting portion and the first cutting edge of an adjacent cutting portion. The peripheral surface has a clearance surface extending from each of the second cutting edges towards the mid-plane. The abutment planes of the insert are parallel to the mid-plane. Each of the first cutting edges lies between an adjacent abutment plane and adjacent primary apex.

Double-sided indexable cutting insert and cutting tool therefor

An adjustment mechanism allows for bidirectional adjustment of the position of a cutting insert retained in a cutting tool by a securing screw. The adjustment mechanism includes an adjustment screw, a slider, the cutting insert and the securing screw. The rotation of the adjustment screw in opposite senses results in the bidirectional axial adjustment of the position of the cutting insert, while the securing screw is fixed in and retains the cutting insert.

A clamping mechanism clamps a cutting insert in a tool body. The clamping mechanism has a clamping arm seated within a clamping arm pocket. The clamping arm includes a clamping protrusion extending rearwardly from a rear surface of the clamping arm. The cutting insert has a bore having an insert retaining surface and is seated within an insert pocket. Upon tightening the clamping arm into the tool body, the clamping protrusion presses against the insert retaining surface and the cutting insert is securely abutted within the insert pocket.

Cutting tool and clamping mechanism therefor

A cutting tool has cartridges in which cutting inserts may be retained. The location of each cartridge is adjustable by a bidirectional adjustment mechanism having an adjustment screw directed in the direction of adjustment. The adjustment screw has a head and a flexible flange with an annular recess therebetween. A protuberance projecting from the cartridge engages the annular recess with an interference fit thereby coupling the adjustment screw to the cartridge. As the adjustment screw is screw rotated about its axis of screw rotation it moves along the axis of screw rotation taking the cartridge with it. Screw rotation of the adjustment screw in opposite senses results in the adjustment of the position of the cartridge in opposite directions. Due to the fact that the protuberance is firmly located in the annular recess of the adjustment screw, play or backlash is eliminated.

The disclosure provides a device for adjusting a position of a cutting insert, the device may include an adjustment screw, an adjustment wedge adapted to receive the screw, wherein a position of the wedge is a function of the rotation of the screw and a partially flexible intermediate member between a surface of the wedge and a surface of the cutting insert, wherein the intermediate member is supported on both ends. The disclosure further provides a cutting tool adapted to receive at least one device for adjusting a position of a cutting insert, wherein the device may include an adjustment screw, an adjustment wedge adapted to receive the screw, wherein a position of the wedge is a function of the rotation of the screw and a partially flexible intermediate member between a surface of the wedge and a surface of the cutting insert, wherein the intermediate member is supported on both ends.
