The apparel includes a front portion, a rear portion, a first continuous member and a second continuous member. The front portion is configured to extend along a wearer's chest while the rear portion is configured to extend along the wearer's back. The first continuous member and the second continuous member extend between the front portion and the rear portion across the wearer's shoulders when the apparel is worn. The first continuous member and the second continuous member further slidably extend along one or both of the front portion and the rear portion. The first continuous member and the second continuous member each also extend between the front portion and the rear portion along the wearer's side when the apparel is worn. The first continuous member and the second continuous member each have an adjustable length.

A personal flotation device having adjustable flotation layers is disclosed. The personal flotation device includes at least one back body portion, at least one front body portion opposite the back body portion, shoulder portions connecting the at least one back body portion and the at least one front body portion, and side portions connecting the at least one back body portion and the at least one front body portion. At least one of the front body portion and the back body portion includes a first flotation layer, a second flotation layer opposite the first flotation layer and a low friction interface layer extending in a plane between the first flotation layer and the second flotation layer. At least one of the first flotation layer and the second flotation layer is movable relative to the low friction in a second plane parallel to the first plane. In one exemplary embodiment, the first flotation layer has a first end and a second end while the second flotation layer has a third end coupled to the first end for movement with the first end and a fourth free end movable relative to the second end. In one exemplary embodiment, the device includes at least one first panel defining a first pocket and at least one second panel defining a second pocket within the first pocket. The first flotation layer is disposed within the first pocket between the second pocket and the at least one first panel while the flotation layer is disposed within the second pocket.

A personal flotation device for being worn by a user includes a buoyant back body portion, a buoyant front body portion opposite the back portion, first and second straps coupled to the back body portion and converging into a third strap, and a fastener coupled to the front body portion. The fastener is configured to engage the third strap at various points to vary spacing between the front body portion and the back body portion.

Heat, pressure, and glue are used to form a composite material in which a layer of U.S. Coast Guard approved flotation foam is located between a pair of fabric layers which are glued to the foam layer. The process of bonding the fabric layers to the foam layer is accomplished using both heat and pressure whereby a fabric covered, foam composite structure is provided. In a preferred embodiment, a flotation foam of the type which can be included in the calculation of flotation for a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD is used, so the composite material can be used both as a fabric and as flotation in a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD.

A U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device for persons engaged in sport activities. The personal flotation device includes a body formed from a series of body panels, or sections, formed from a fabric covered soft foam flotation material. Elastic armhole periphery members are attached about the armholes of the PFD intend to engage the shoulders and upper arms of the wearer. The armhole periphery members are formed from an elastic, stretchable material so as to enable the armhole periphery members to flex and conform to the shoulders and upper arms of the wearer as the arms, shoulders, and upper torso of the wearer move while the wearer performs water sport activities. This allows the PFD to move and conform to the body of the wearer for enhanced comfort and increased ability of the wearer.

A life vest having a safety belt harness system. A safety belt of the safety belt harness system is threaded through loops on the life vest and is secured to the vest with a quick release, cam-type buckle. Removably attacheed to the back of the vest is a metal D-ring. The safety harness is threaded through the D-ring. A rope acting as a life line may be attached to the D-ring and then the other end of the rope attached to an object on shore, a helicopter, or to another person during rescue attempts. The rope connected to the D-ring of the life vest will be tensioned, for instance, when a rescuer descends from a helicopter, by the rope, during a rescue attempt. If the person wearing the life vest with the D-ring should get into trouble and need to immediately be detached from the rope to which they are connected, the person can unbuckle the cam-type buckle of the safety strap which, due to the tensioning of the rope connected to the D-ring, will pull the D-ring away from its VELCRO.RTM. connection on the rear of the vest. Since the safety belt has become unbuckled, the free end of the belt will unthread out of the D-ring and the D-ring will be pulled away from the vest leaving only the D-ring attached to the loose end of the rope.
