Articles comprising, in order: a first adherend, a first primer layer, an adhesive layer, and a second adherend are provided, where the adhesive layer comprises pressure sensitive adhesive domains and structural adhesive domains. Typically, the first primer layer covers first portions of the first adherend adjacent to structural adhesive domains and does not cover second portions of the first adherend adjacent to pressure sensitive adhesive domains. Methods of making such articles are provided, which comprise applying a cure-initiating primer to first portions of the first adherend to form a first primer layer while leaving second portions of the first adherend bare of the first primer layer, and thereafter applying a curable adhesive film over the first primer layer, such that portions of the curable adhesive film are cured to form structural adhesive domains and other portions remain uncured pressure sensitive adhesive domains.

Adjustable hybrid PSA/structural adhesive bonds by patterned surface-initiated cure

Curable adhesive free-standing films and adhesive systems comprising such films are provided. In some embodiments, a curable adhesive free-standing film comprises a blend of: a) a first film-forming polymer or oligomer; b) a first species comprising first unsaturated free-radically polymerizable groups, which may be a) or a species other than a); c) a first transition metal cation; d) a reducing agent; and no oxidizing agent. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a first curable adhesive free-standing film as described preceding; and II) a second curable adhesive free-standing film comprising a blend of: e) a second film-forming polymer or oligomer; f) a second species comprising second unsaturated free-radically polymerizable groups, which may be e) or may be a species other than e); and g) an oxidizing agent. In some embodiments, the curable adhesive free-standing films may be pressure sensitive adhesives prior to cure. Methods of use are provided.

Film-initiated cure of structural adhesive film

Curable adhesive films, primers for adhesion of curable adhesive films, and adhesive systems comprising adhesive films and primers are provided. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising a blend of: a) a first film-forming polymer or oligomer; b) a first species comprising first unsaturated free-radically polymerizable groups, which may be a) or a species other than a); and c) a first transition metal cation; and II) a primer for adhesion of a curable adhesive free-standing film to a first substrate comprising an oxidizing agent. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising an outer surface bearing embossed air bleed channels capable of aiding in escape of air during application of the outer surface to a primed substrate; and II) a primer comprising components that initiate cure of the curable adhesive free-standing film.

Described herein is a multilayered article () and methods of making and using such articles. The multilayered article () comprises: ⋅(a) a microsphere layer () comprising a plurality of microspheres disposed in a monolayer; ⋅(b) a bead bonding layer () comprising a first major surface and a second opposing major surface and the plurality of microspheres is partially embedded in the first major surface of the bead bonding layer, and comprises a thermoset polyurethane having a glass transition temperature of at least 35° C.; ⋅(c) a primer layer () disposed on the second major surface of the bead bonding layer wherein the primer layer comprises a copolymer of polyurea and polyurethane and wherein the primer layer is covalently attached to the bead bonding layer via urea linkages; and ⋅(d) an elastomeric layer () disposed on the primer layer opposite the bead bonding layer, wherein the elastomeric layer comprises a polyurethane thermoplastic elastomer.

Microsphere-coated polyurethane articles and methods of making the same

A core-sheath filament including a crosslinkable adhesive core that can be cured using ultraviolet or visible light radiation. These crosslinkable adhesive core compositions can provide very high bond strength and are capable of replacing traditional mechanical fasteners in many industrial applications. Core-sheath filaments including such crosslinkable compositions, crosslinked compositions, articles containing these compositions, and methods of making the articles are provided. The crosslinkable compositions contain pendant aromatic ketone groups or pendant (meth)acryloyl groups that, upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, result in the formation of crosslinks within the polymeric material. The crosslinked compositions can function as pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Described herein is an article comprising (i) bead film comprising a binder resin layer and a plurality of microspheres partially embedded in the binder resin layer such that a portion of the microspheres outwardly protrude a first distance from the surface of the binder resin layer; (ii) a stabilizing layer disposed on the outwardly protruding microspheres opposite the binder resin layer, wherein the stabilizing layer intimately conforms to the protruding microspheres, and wherein the stabilizing layer has a Tg less than 100 C and a storage modulus at 150&#xb0; C. of at least 1.5 MPa; and (iii) a release agent, wherein (a) the binder resin layer comprises the release agent, (b) the stabilizing layer comprises the release agent, and/or (c) an intermediate layer comprises the release agent, wherein the intermediate layer is disposed between the monolayer of microspheres and the stabilizing layer, with the proviso that when the binder resin layer has a fluorine content along the polymeric backbone greater than 65 wt %, the stabilizing layer comprises a release agent selected from a silicone and a fluoropolymer. An additive layer manufacturing method, preferably using selective laser sintering, for manufacturing a solid article, the method including applying a layer of a powder, the powder including at least one powdered (co)polymer, onto a solid substrate in a processing chamber; fusing the powder layer onto the solid substrate; subsequently depositing successive layers of the powder, wherein each successive layer is selectively fused prior to deposition of the subsequent layer of powder so as to form the article. In some embodiments, the powder further includes abrasive particles having a hardness greater than or equal to that of aluminum oxide.
