Predicting material color shifts due to weathering. A color formulation tool determines the concentration of colorants from a color standard. The color formulation tool obtains weathered optical parameters for the color standard from a color database and predicts the color of the color standard from the colorant concentrations and weathered optical parameters.

The color stability of thermoplastic polymers comprising structural units derived from at least one 1,3-dihydroxybenzene and at least one organodicarboxylic acid is enhanced by combination with at least one photobleachable 4-aminocinnamic compound such as 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde. The latter absorbs radiation in the range between about 360 nanometers and about 390 nanometers, balancing the radiation absorbed by hydroxybenzophenone moieties formed in the polymer.

Resinous compositions, especially synthetic resins and most especially arylate polymers, contain 2,3-dicyano-1,4-diaminoanthraquinone as a blue dye. Said compositions are characterized by improved weatherability in comparison with compositions containing other blue dyes.

Color stability of resinous compositions containing dyes which undergo chemical degradation upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range of 300-400 nm is improved by incorporating therein an arylate polymer which is a 1,3-dihydroxybenzene isophthalate/terephthalate, preferably a resorcinol isophthalate/terephthalate. Other resins may also be present.
