A leaf spring shaping machine including upper and lower spring forming elements one of which is constituted by a plurality of closely spaced abutment members, and a mechanism for adjusting and constantly monitoring the positions of said abutment members individually in order to adjust and maintain the effective shape of the one spring forming element. The other of the spring forming elements may be constituted by a pair of arms pivotally connected together and extending outwards from a vertically movable seat clamp which together with a fixed block forms a workpiece clamping arrangement.

Taper rolling apparatus including a pair of rolls (10,12) the spacing of which can be varied according to the linear movement of a workpiece clamped in a carriage assembly (26). So that the roll gap can remain at a constant mean height throughout the rolling operation, mechanism including a horizontally disposed wedge member (56) is provided, the wedge member being constrained to move along a horizontal path and effecting the adjustment of pairs of roll chocks (44,44 and 46,46) bearing against the opposite sides of said wedge member.

A rolling mill provided with a pair of rolls rotatable in a roll housing and in a first mode of operation drivably connected to respective drive gears of a main frame and gear housing, the drive gears meshing with respective pinions which mesh together, the main frame and gear housing being capable of being located in either one of two positions angularly spaced at 180 degrees, and the drive gears and pinions are capable of being re-adjusted in position whereby in a second mode of operation the drive gears can be brought into mutually meshing positions and the pinions can be moved apart to become the gears with which the rolls are drivably connected.

Rolling mill

Decelerator apparatus acting to reduce the distance over which lengths of hot rolled product slide before coming to a halt on leaving a rolling mill stand. So as to avoid the use of pinch rolls or the like, the apparatus employs deforming rollers acting on a leading length of said rolled product in a direction perpendicular to its length and a shear for severing the leading length of product from a following length being acted on by said rolling mill stand whilst said rollers are still in motion.

Decelerator apparatus for hot rolled product

A rolling mill run-in table has at least two parallel paths extending alongside the receiving end of a cooling bed. First and second slide members extend respectively along each path on the side thereof closest to the cooling bed. First and second unitary lift assemblies extend respectively along the opposite side of each path. Each lift assembly has a side channel opening laterally towards the cooling bed. An underlying operating mechanism alternately adjusts the left assemblies between lowermost positions at which their side channels are closed by the adjacent slide members and aligned with the respective paths to confine product lengths moving axially therealong, and elevated positions at which the side channels are above the receiving paths and clear of the adjacent slide members to accommodate lateral discharge of the product lengths onto the receiving end of the cooling bed.

A rod or bar mill stand (72) is constructed to be used either in vertical or horizontal disposition. When in the horizontal disposition the rolls (3) are driven directly by the usual drive consisting of motor, pinion box and drive spindles which are arranged at the same general level as the stand. When the stand is in the vertical disposition, a drive adaptor (50) is introduced to transmit the drive from the drive spindles to universal spindles (71) arranged about the stand (72) to connect to the necks of the rolls (3).

Rolling mill stand

A rod, bar or section mill has a train of rolling mill stands, each of which is attached to a bed plate with which the stand is introduced into, and withdrawn from, the mill. The bed plate carries pedestals on which are secured guides; those guides can be properly located on the bed plate prior to entry of the stand into the mill; on the stand being positioned in the mill, the guides are then automatically located relative to the pass-line and the down-time of the mill on stand replacement is reduced.

Replacement stand for rolling mill

A taper-rolling machine comprises a four-high rolling mill having driven work rolls and means for adjusting one work roll and its back-up roll relative to the other work roll; a drawbar reciprocable relative to the rolling mill for drawing a blank through the mill; a mechanism for adjusting the adjustable work roll and back-up roll according to the position of the drawbar to effect taper rolling; and edger rolls acting on the blank to control the widthwise spread of the blank during rolling by the rolling mill.

A rolling machine for reducing the cross-sectional dimensions of an elongate workpiece, such as a steel billet, has two pairs of alternately operating rolls, each of which is journalled in an individual roll carrier. Each carrier is rotated about a carrier axis which is inclined at an angle of about 45.degree. to the axis of rotation of the roll journalled in the carrier. The carrier axes form the sides of a square around the passline which is normal to the plane in which the carrier axes are located. As the carriers rotate the two pairs of rolls alternately sweep over the workpiece and intermittently contact and reduce the workpiece in directions which are mutually at right angles. To avoid the formation of sharp edges to the rolled workpiece, either each roll is collared to enclose a workpiece edge, or each carrier additionally carries an edger roll which rounds that edge.

Rolling machine

A rolling mill stand, particularly for rolling rod, has two roll shafts each carrying a roll. Each roll shaft is carried by an eccentric shaft which also carries a drive shaft aligned with the roll shaft and coupled to it through a drive coupling permitting limited misalignment between the roll and drive shafts. An adjustment drive mechanism acts on the two eccentric shafts to turn them equally and oppositely and to cause the separation between the roll shafts and between the drive shafts to be altered. Each drive shaft has a gear drive consisting of a gear on the drive shaft meshing with a gear on an auxiliary drive shaft and the gears on the two auxiliary drive shafts mesh with one another.

Roll stand

A rolling mill stand, particularly for a rod or bar mill, has, at each side of the pass line, a rotary roll housing which includes a number of fitments each for detachably carrying a roll assembly. By rotating the roll housings, one of the roll assemblies of each roll housing can be brought into a rolling position, in which it is coupled to drive means. In order to change the rolls at the rolling positions, each of the roll housings is rotated to bring a fresh roll assembly into position. The stand has a roll change rig enabling one or more of the roll assemblies of each roll housing to be quickly run out of the stand and replaced by substitute roll assemblies.

A rod or bar mill stand has two work-roll carrying mountings which are pivoted together on one side of the plane containing the roll axes and which are individually connected to synchronously driven eccentrices. The eccentric drives for the roll mountings, together with the pivotal connection, cause each of the roll axes to follow an eliptical or oval path, such that each roll approaches the pass line to reduce the work, over a part only of the path. The work rolls are driven about their own axes to induce forward movement of the work.
