The present invention relates to a pre-coding method for spatial multiplexing, comprising the steps of: performing a beam search for beam forming with a receiver device equipped with multiple antennas to perform pre-coding for spatial multiplexing in a transmitter device equipped with multiple antennas; transmitting a first packet including at least one or more training sequences to the receiver device after completion of said beam search; receiving, from the receiver device, a second packet including feedback information for pre-coding, determined in the receiver device by using the training sequences; and performing pre-coding for spatial multiplexing, onto the data stream to be transmitted to the receiver device, by using the pre-coding matrix calculated on the basis of the feedback information.

The present invention relates to estimating the Angle of Arrival (AoA) of a signal from a user equipment received at a base station of a wireless telecommunications network where the base station has a multi-beam antenna. A signal received from a user equipment is received by the each of the multiple beams of the antenna, and the two adjacent beams receiving the highest amplitude from the end user are selected. A ratio of functions of the amplitudes of the two selected beams, such as a ratio of the difference between the amplitudes of the two beams to the sum of the amplitudes is calculated and compared to a data store of ratios. The data store stores expected ratios corresponding to AoAs and the calculated ratio is compared to the pre-calculated expected ratios to extract an estimate of the AoA of the signal from the user equipment.

Angle of arrival estimation in a wireless telecommunications network

The invention provides a method of predicting the power of a received wireless signal (e.g. as received by a mobile device), the method having the steps of: sampling the power of the received wireless signal over an observation interval to obtain a series of values representative of the power of the received wireless signal over the observation interval; and extrapolating the series of values beyond the observation interval to predict the future power of the received wireless signal. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method has the steps of: sampling the power of the received wireless signal over an observation interval to obtain a first series of values representative of the power of the received wireless signal over the observation interval; performing an additive white gaussian noise smoothing operation on the first series of values to give a series of smoothed samples over the observation interval, and removing the bias due to the influence of the additive white gaussian noise; performing least mean squares curve fitting on the smoothed samples; fitting a second order polynomial curve to the smoothed samples; and extrapolating the fitted curve beyond the observation interval to predict the future power of the received wireless signal. Also provided are a wireless device (e.g. a mobile phone) having signal processing apparatus operable to perform such a method, and a wireless communications network including a plurality of such wireless devices.
